In a surprising turn of events, the dismissal by Joseph Osei Owusu, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Bekwai, of reports suggesting an imminent change in the majority leadership has sparked a divided impression within the Majority Caucus in Parliament.

The Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, and a prominent figure within the Majority Caucus, Dickson Adomako Kissi, has expressed his support for reshuffling, emphasizing the benefits of providing opportunities for new talents to emerge.

The Anyaa Sowutuom Member of Parliament strongly asserted that even though not every Member of the Majority Caucus may agree on the change in the Caucus leadership, there is a need and importance for the Caucus to foster unity once a decision is made within the caucus.

“I am very much in support of reshuffle. I have been in support of it for close to two years. I am of the opinion that when we do reshuffle, it gives other people the opportunity to exhibit what they know and their talents”.

Furthermore, the Honorable Adomako Kissi advocated for further interaction with the government and the party to confirm the veracity of the reports and determine the way forward.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the African Center for Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. Rasheed Draman, described the attempt to change the leadership of the Majority Caucus in Parliament as a ‘failed coup’.

Dr Draman commenting on the issue, alleged that some factions within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in Parliament, in partnership with some of the national executives of the party had masterminded a scheme to outs  the current Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

The Executive Director of the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs further expressed concerns about the move and argued that the plot to change the Majority Caucus in Parliament is undemocratic, which could harm the unity in the Caucus in Parliament

It is important to mention that the happening within the Majority Caucus in Parliament, particularly with the statement by the Anyaa Sowutuom Member of Parliament shows the complexities and differences within the Caucus.

The Honorable Dickson Adomako Kissi’s statement also hinted at a potential communication gap between the government, the party, and the caucus members.

This implies a need for transparent and open communication channels to bridge any gaps and avoid misinformation that could lead to internal discord.

The current situation highlights the necessity for collaboration between the party in government and its caucus in Parliament.

A cohesive and united front is crucial for effective governance and legislative processes, hence the party leadership must engage in constructive dialogue with caucus members to address concerns, clarify positions, and foster a sense of shared purpose among its members in Parliament.

In navigating this rift, the party leadership must prioritize inclusivity and consider the diverse perspectives within the caucus as well as the newly adopted Standing Order of Parliament that gives the power of the selection of Caucus to the various Caucus in Parliament.

Here, the ruling party must engage in open forums for discussion, where concerns can be raised and addressed, in order to help build trust and solidarity among members of the caucus.

In addition, the party should underscore the importance of working collectively toward the best interests of both the party and the country as well. By fostering a culture of collaboration and inclusivity, the party can strengthen its internal unity and present a more formidable force in Parliament and ahead of the upcoming election.

The party’s ability to address internal rifts and present a united front will undoubtedly contribute to its overall success in navigating the complex landscape of parliamentary politics as well as itsvision to break the eight.
