Chinese Premier, Li Qiang has asserted that China is ready to work with Malaysia to bolster ties and for development.

Li noted that China-Malaysia ties are at the forefront among relations between regional countries, and have set a benchmark and an example.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim.

The Chinese Premier said that China is ready to work with Malaysia to continue to prioritise bilateral relations in their respective foreign policies and take the opportunity of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties to accelerate the building of a China-Malaysia community with a shared future, maintain close high-level exchanges, strengthen cooperation in various sectors and continuously enrich the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

Li added that China is ready to work with Malaysia to refine their development strategies more closely and give full play to their complementary advantages.

Furthermore, Li called on the two sides to increase people-to-people and cultural exchanges in such areas as culture, tourism, and education, as well as between the youths of the two nations and at the sub-national level to further facilitate personnel exchanges between the two countries.

For his part, Anwar said Malaysia cherishes its friendship with China and is firmly committed to consolidating the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

He stressed that Malaysia adheres to the one-China policy, firmly supports the reunification of China, and does not support any words or deeds advocating “Taiwan independence.”

Noting that Malaysia-China relations are at a new starting point, Anwar said that Malaysia is willing to take the opportunity of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties, to further strengthen exchanges at various levels as well as cooperation in such areas as trade, investment, agriculture, digital economy, education and poverty reduction.

He added that his country is willing to actively advance the construction of major projects, promote people-to-people and cultural exchanges, enhance mutual learning among civilisations and advance dialogue and cooperation between China and Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Also on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, China and Malaysia agreed to renew a five-year economic and trade cooperation pact.

Following private talks, Chinese Premier, Li Qiang and Malaysian Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim witnessed the signing of various pacts, including the economic and trade deal.

Officials said that the pact would bolster links between industries in priority sectors like high-level manufacturing and the digital economy.

Other agreements signed aim to promote investment in green development, combat transnational crime, and boost housing and urban development, higher education, people-to-people exchanges in science and technology, tourism and cultural cooperation, Anwar’s office said.

Li is also expected to meet Malaysia’s King, Sultan Ibrahim, and attend a groundbreaking ceremony at a construction site for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative on Wednesday.
