Tullow Ghana Enters New Era with Leadership Transition

Tullow Ghana Limited (TGL), a prominent player in Ghana’s oil and gas industry, has announced significant changes to its leadership team, signaling a pivotal moment for the company.

Wissam Al-Monthiry, who has served as the Managing Director in Ghana for the past four years, will be stepping down from his position at the end of July 2024 to pursue a new career opportunity.

Wissam Al-Monthiry’s departure marks the end of a transformative era for TGL, during which Al-Monthiry played a crucial role in the company’s organizational transformation and the successful delivery of key projects, most notably the Jubilee South-East project.

During his tenure, Wissam Al-Monthiry has been a driving force behind Tullow’s success in Ghana. His leadership has been instrumental in the operational turnaround of the Ghana business and the progressive localization initiatives that have become hallmark achievements for Tullow.

The Jubilee South-East project, a cornerstone of Tullow’s operations, stands as a testament to Al-Monthiry’s vision and execution, ensuring the company’s strong foothold in the region.

Reflecting on his departure, Al-Monthiry expressed his gratitude towards his colleagues and stakeholders.

“Over the last four years, we have chalked several successes, working with all our stakeholders to achieve the operational turnaround in the Ghana business.

“Whatever success I achieved during my time is attributable to the hardworking colleagues I worked with. I would like to thank the Tullow Ghana team for all their support and assistance and wish them all the best for the future.”

In the interim, Jean-Medard Madama, who currently serves as the Director for Tullow Plc’s Non-Operated portfolio and Exploration Business unit, will take over the reins in Ghana.

Jean-Medard’s extensive technical expertise and leadership experience, spanning over three decades in the oil and gas sector across Africa, Europe, and North America, position him as a capable interim leader.

His prior role as Country Manager for Tullow’s Gabon business has provided him with a deep understanding of Tullow’s operations and strategic goals, which will be invaluable as the company looks to optimize the TEN field and explore further growth opportunities in the Jubilee field.

Jean-Medard Expresses Enthusiasm for New Role

Jean-Medard expressed his enthusiasm for his new role, stating, “I am looking forward to building on the strong foundations established by Wissam and the team in Ghana to ensure that Tullow continues to play a key role in Ghana’s oil and gas industry.”

Jean-Medard’s experience and familiarity with Tullow’s business dynamics are expected to facilitate a smooth transition and continuity in the company’s strategic initiatives.

Rahul Dhir, Chief Executive Officer of Tullow Oil Plc, acknowledged Al-Monthiry’s contributions and the impact of his leadership.

“Wissam has been instrumental in the operational turnaround we have achieved in Ghana and the progressive localisation success stories we have recorded so far.

“Due to his deep technical knowledge and extensive business leadership experience, Wissam has made substantial impact during his time at Tullow, and we are of course sad to see him leave. We wish him well and remain grateful for his significant contributions to Tullow.”

As Tullow navigates this leadership transition, the company remains committed to its strategic objectives in Ghana. The appointment of Jean-Medard Madama in an interim capacity ensures that the momentum generated under Al-Monthiry’s leadership will continue.

Tullow’s focus on optimizing existing operations and exploring new growth avenues in the region underscores its dedication to maintaining a strong presence in Ghana’s oil and gas industry.

The leadership changes at Tullow Ghana mark a new chapter for the company, promising continued progress and strategic advancements. With a seasoned leader like Jean-Medard at the helm during this transitional phase, Tullow is well-positioned to uphold its commitment to operational excellence and sustainable growth in Ghana.
