In a decisive step towards fulfilling his promise to see through the implementation of the Constitutional Review Process, President John Dramani Mahama on 19th January, 2025 has officially established a new Constitution Review Committee.

This move underscores the commitment to enhancing democratic governance and addressing gaps in Ghana’s 1992 constitution.

The newly formed committee comprises a team of highly esteemed individuals, each bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to the table. The members include:

  1. Prof. H. Kwasi Prempeh – Chairman
  2. Justice Sophia Adinyirah – Member
  3. Prof. Kwame Karikari – Member
  4. Mrs. Charlotte Osei – Member
  5. Dr. Godwin Djokoto – Member
  6. Ibrahim Tanko Amidu – Member
  7. Dr. Esi Ansah – Member
  8. Dr. Rainer Akumperigeya – Secretary

This diverse group of professionals reflects the President’s desire to engage individuals who have demonstrated proven expertise and a dedication to good governance. The selection aims to ensure that the review process is conducted with the utmost diligence and impartiality.

“The Committee is expected to identify and address the gaps in, and the challenges with the implementation of, previous constitutional review work done by the 2010 Constitution Review Commission and the 2023 Constitution Review Consultative Committee.”

In addition to this, the Committee is tasked with engaging key stakeholders to gather a wide range of views on proposed amendments to the 1992 Constitution.

This inclusive approach ensures that the recommendations made are well-informed and reflective of the collective will of the people.

The overarching goal of this review process is to make actionable recommendations that will enhance democratic governance in Ghana.

By addressing the identified challenges and proposing amendments, the Committee aims to fortify the country’s constitutional framework.

“The Committee will present its recommendations for constitutional amendments within five (5) months for consideration by the Government.”

This timeline emphasizes the urgency and importance the President places on this initiative. The five-month period is to allow for comprehensive deliberations and consultations, ensuring that the final recommendations are robust and practicable.

President Mahama’s decision to form this Committee demonstrates his unwavering commitment to constitutional reform.

 By involving experts from various fields, the President aims to ensure the process is transparent, inclusive, and results-oriented.

The statement, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson to the President, highlights this commitment.

Meanwhile, the NDC government’s willingness to act on these recommendations will testify to its commitment to upholding and enhancing the democratic principles enshrined in Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
