JOHN DUMELO JOINS OTHER CELEBRITIES TO CRITICIZE GIJ’S MANAGEMENT DECISION

Reading Time: 4 mins read
John Dumelo is pleading with Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDco), to hold on with their demolition plans for another three months.

John Dumelo, a Ghanaian actor turned politician.

Ghanaian actor turned politician, John Dumelo has joined other celebrities to chide management of the Ghana Institute of Journalism over an “unfair” decision.

This follows a statement from the school’s management, directing students who failed to meet the deadline for registration of courses to defer their courses.

“…students who paid their fees after the registration deadline should defer their programme”.

Management of GIJ

The Authorities also stated in the statement that: “All affected students are to take note of this directive and act accordingly”.

John Dumelo taking to his Twitter page wrote: “it’s unfair to tell students to defer after late payments. [It’s] Simply unfair! #justiceforgijstudents”

The actor’s posts got several social media users talking. Most of them who sided with him averred that the decision by the school’s management is beyond “wickedness”. Others also advised students of the Institution to demonstrate peacefully, so that it doesn’t incite any combat. Some reactions from his post read:

It’s absolutely unfair. It’s very difficult comprehending the reasoning behind this resolution taking into consideration the times we are in. #justiceforgijstudents

I remember having to standup for myself against my auditing lecturer when he was being inconsiderate n condescending. He now calls me Mr. If the system isnt working on your favour resort to your last power as a youth which is your voice, respect n demo against injustice

hmmm unfair??, this wickednesssss!!!!!, they let us pay fees, get index numbers, register online in that useless LMS that's always giving problems, write mid-sem exams, collect ID card, now just 5 days to end of sem exams they're saying defer. #justiceforgijstudents

This has put several students and some Ghanaian celebrities in a fury. They have taken to social media to rebuke the decision of the school’s authorities.

OTHER CELEBRITIES JOIN IN THE CONTROVERSY

That notwithstanding, John Dumelo isn’t the only Ghanaian celebrity to speak against this issue. Ghanaian media personality Berla Mundi also waded into the controversy. In a post on her social media page, she lamented that the decision was an “unfair” one. She wrote: “I’m told the registration portal for #GIJ has been down for some months. So, students who paid their fees before the deadline have not been able to register. They have filed complaints with authorities of the school and nothing has been done. This is unfair! #justiceforgijstudents”.

More so, another celebrity who joined in chiding the management of GIJ is Ghanaian singer and songwriter, Sister Derby. ‘The African Mermaid’, Sister Derby posited that the school’s authority should give back the fees paid by the affected students. Taking to her Twitter page, she wrote: “Have they told you they want to defer? Give them their money back at least. So they can freely decide what they want to do with their lives; as you clearly don’t have their interest at heart! If any authority there, has a heart at all! #justiceforgijstudents”.

However, the school’s authority have said nothing yet as to whether there will be some changes, or they still stand by its decision. Meanwhile, some students of the institution are demonstrating both on the school’s campus and on social media with the hashtag #justiceforgijstudents and #OccupyGIJCampus.

More so, that was great. Nonetheless, it was fun to be. Similarly, our system is good. Moreover, we are happy. Still, we like him. Yet, we admire his work. But, who can eat.
