The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA), acting on behalf of the Ministry of Roads and Highways, has issued a public notice informing motorists and the general public of a temporary reduction in the number of lanes on the north-southbound carriageway around the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange.

The measure, which takes effect from Sunday, 22nd June 2025, forms part of the ongoing construction works on the Accra-Tema Motorway and Extensions Project, covering a stretch of 19.5 kilometres.

According to the Authority, the affected section lies between Madina and Accra on both the northbound and southbound sides of the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, a critical node within the capital’s road network.

The current four-lane configuration will be reduced to three lanes in each direction for a period of four months to make way for the construction of central piers that will support the expansion of the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange Bridge.

The GHA explained that this intervention is essential to provide a safe and secure working environment for construction personnel while maintaining sufficient road space for vehicular movement.

Authorities are therefore appealing to all road users to comply with traffic instructions and observe caution to prevent accidents and congestion during the construction period.

“This lane reduction is a vital component of the broader Accra-Tema Motorway and Extensions Project. It is intended to ensure that the central pier construction for the upgraded bridge is done efficiently and safely”.

Ghana Highway Authority

The expansion of the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange is a major infrastructure upgrade under the Motorway and Extensions Project, which aims to improve the flow of traffic and reduce travel time for commuters plying the Accra-Tema corridor.

The Interchange serves as a gateway to key commercial, residential, and administrative zones within the Greater Accra Region, connecting motorists from Legon, East Legon, Madina, Spintex, and the central business district of Accra.

High Traffic Volumes

Given the high traffic volumes typically experienced at this junction, especially during peak hours, the reduction in lanes is expected to cause some inconvenience to road users.

However, the Ghana Highway Authority assured the public that traffic management systems have been put in place to reduce delays.

This includes clear directional signage, visible demarcations, and the deployment of traffic management officials to guide and assist motorists throughout the period.

“We kindly urge motorists to exercise patience and caution. We are confident that with the support of all stakeholders, the works will proceed smoothly, and the resulting infrastructure will bring long-term relief and efficiency to the road network”.

The GHA further encouraged the public to stay informed and report any concerns or inquiries regarding the traffic changes by reaching out to the Public Affairs Division through the dedicated WhatsApp contact: 055 162 2244.

Transport unions are especially urged to brief their drivers about the upcoming changes and ensure they plan their journeys accordingly.

As urban mobility continues to pose a challenge in the Greater Accra Region, especially along the critical Madina-Accra-Tema corridor, the Accra-Tema Motorway and Extensions Project represents a major intervention to modernise road infrastructure and enhance connectivity.

The ongoing construction and engineering works, though disruptive in the short term, are aimed at transforming the road network to meet the demands of Ghana’s growing urban population and economy.

The Ghana Highway Authority reiterated its commitment to ensuring safety and minimal disruption to road users while appealing for the public’s cooperation during the four-month construction period.
