Ghana Police Service investigates murder of immigration officer

Ghana Police Service

The Ghana Police Service has launched a comprehensive investigation into the brutal killing of an immigration officer, whose body was found burnt and abandoned in a gutter near the GBC Satellite area, opposite Comet Estate in Accra.

The disturbing incident sent shockwaves through the public and triggered an immediate, high-priority response from law enforcement authorities.

In an official statement released by the Accra Regional Police Command, the body discovered on the morning of 9th July 2025 has been confirmed as that of Stephen King Amoah, an officer with the Ghana Immigration Service.

Amoah had been reported missing since 4th July, and his disappearance had triggered a wide search effort by both family and authorities.

“On the morning of 9th July 2025, the Police discovered a severely burnt body in the said location and conveyed it to the Police Hospital morgue. Following this development, investigators from the Taifa Police joined the scene and later proceeded to the morgue with the complainant and six other relatives.”

Despite the severe burns, family members were able to positively identify the deceased at the morgue as Amoah. His sudden and violent death has raised serious concerns, especially given the circumstances leading up to his disappearance.

According to the Police, initial findings revealed that Amoah had left his home at Ashongman Estate at about 8:00 p.m. on 3rd July 2025.

Before his departure, he reportedly received WhatsApp messages containing images of large bundles of cash from an individual named Bright Aweh. Aweh requested to meet Amoah at a local Spot to settle an outstanding debt.

That evening, Amoah never returned home. His phone remained off, and all attempts to reach him proved futile.

The following days yielded no information about his whereabouts—until the grim discovery of his charred remains six days later.

Suspect Gives Conflicting Statements

As part of the investigation into the Immigration Officer Murder, the Police carried out a targeted operation which led to the arrest of Bright Aweh. During interrogation, Aweh admitted to giving Amoah GHS 500,000.00 in cash.

He claimed that part of the money was to be used to clear some debts, while the remaining portion was to be held by Amoah for future collection.

However, investigators quickly identified discrepancies in Aweh’s account. According to the statement, “The suspect could not clearly explain the source of the funds and gave conflicting statements.”

The inconsistencies have deepened suspicions around the suspect’s involvement in the murder, and the police are working to piece together the full narrative.

It remains unclear whether the killing was financially motivated, an act of revenge, or part of a larger criminal conspiracy.

Accordingly, the Regional Police Command categorically denounced the act, emphasizing that such brutal violence against public servants is completely unacceptable.

“The Regional Police Command strongly condemns such violent and criminal acts and assures the public that it is working diligently to uncover the full circumstances surrounding this incident and bring all responsible persons to justice.”

The Police further encouraged the public to assist with any information that could aid the investigation.

Members of the public are urged to report suspicious activities and share tips by contacting the nearest police station or calling emergency numbers 18555 or 192.

Police Urge Vigilance

The case also reignited broader concerns about the safety of public officers, particularly those serving in national security institutions.

Many observers have called for increased protection for frontline personnel, as well as improved mechanisms for resolving disputes involving money or personal obligations.

While the murder of the immigration officer has so far yielded one suspect in custody, police have not ruled out the involvement of other accomplices.

The investigation is still ongoing, with multiple angles being pursued—including financial crime, premeditated homicide, and potential organized syndicate links.

As the community mourns the tragic loss of Stephen King Amoah, a man remembered by colleagues as committed and principled, the Ghana Police Service pledged to pursue justice without delay.

This includes not only holding the suspect accountable but also unraveling the motives and network behind the gruesome killing.

The public awaits further developments, hopeful that transparency and diligence will prevail in solving what has become one of the most unsettling security breaches in recent months.
