NPP Gears Up For Political Rebuild Ahead of Delegate Conference

NPP's internal party democracy at risk

The upcoming NPP Delegate Conference has been positioned as a strategic event to help the New Patriotic Party rebuild its political base and re-establish its relevance as Ghana’s preferred political choice.

According to Richard Ahiagbah, Director of Communication of the party, the theme for the gathering—“Rebuilding Together With Our Values”—reflects the party’s objective of reconnecting with its historical roots and realigning its strategy with the core principles that originally endeared it to Ghanaians.

Speaking to the press during the official launch of the NPP Delegate Conference, Ahiagbah highlighted the significance of the theme.

He explained that rebuilding the party requires a deep focus on its founding values and principles, without which the New Patriotic Party cannot reclaim its place as the leading political force in Ghana. Ahiagbah asserted that the party’s historical adherence to these guiding standards had long established it as the “darling party of Ghana.”

Accordingly,  Ahiagbah reminded the audience that “there is nothing we can do or achieve without adherence to principles and values.” He emphasized that these foundational beliefs had distinguished the NPP from rival parties and were central to its image and success.

He noted that every mention of the NPP conjures pride among its supporters, given the party’s historic commitment to the rule of law, respect for constitutional order, and safeguarding civil liberties.

Ahiagbah used the platform to recount the political history of the NPP, recalling how the party’s forebears stood firm against tyranny during the PNDC era.

He described the struggle as one motivated by a deep respect for the rule of law and democratic governance, which ultimately led to the birth of Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

“I should say just last week, you saw the face of tyranny as it was back in the days, and that was just a surface scratch we saw in Ablekuma North. There were worse days, but our forebears stood and resisted for their love for the rule of law.”

He also reminded Ghanaians that the party is grounded in its defense of individual liberties. According to him, the NPP believes strongly that each individual is endowed with certain rights that must be protected and upheld, regardless of external pressures or governmental changes.

Ahiagbah further noted that this fundamental commitment to civil freedoms distinguishes the NPP from its opponents.

At the core of his argument, Ahiagbah reiterated that private enterprise forms the backbone of the NPP’s economic strategy. He stressed that the growth of Ghana’s private sector remains essential for national development.

Highlighting the previous administration’s flagship initiative, he lamented the discontinuation of the One District One Factory policy under the current government.

He explained that the policy had successfully generated around 160,000 jobs for Ghanaians and played a crucial role in industrializing the country.

Ahiagbah criticized the ruling NDC government for cancelling the initiative in favor of the “24-hour plus” program, which he dismissed as unstructured and unclear.

“The one district, one factory is Ghana’s path to industrialization, and we hope that the NDC and the president will reconsider, but if not, we’re appealing to Ghanaians to bring us back so that we can advance that good policy for the betterment of our country.”

NPP Vows Return To Limited Government Principles

In addressing concerns raised by party supporters, Richard Ahiagbah acknowledged that the NPP had previously expanded the size of government, a move that drew widespread criticism.

However, he insisted that the party remains committed to its founding principle of limited government and would now prioritize restructuring to address those concerns.

The NPP conference theme, he explained, is designed as a direct response to the feedback received from Ghanaians who, in recent years, have expressed dissatisfaction and confusion over the party’s identity.

Ahiagbah admitted that the blurred lines between the NPP and its opposition had left many citizens disenchanted.

The party now intends to reconnect aggressively with its ideological roots to regain public trust.

The theme signals a conscious shift toward reaffirming the NPP’s dedication to values like the rule of law, individual liberty, private enterprise, and limited government.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the New Patriotic Party is committed to moving forward together as one united force dedicated to promoting, advocating for, and defending the interests of our dear country. This is a commitment with which we hope to emerge from the conference on Saturday.”

Accordingly, Ahiagbah called on all members of the party to embrace unity and cooperation during the NPP conference and beyond.

He expressed confidence that with the collective energy and commitment of party members, the NPP can once again emerge as Ghana’s political party of choice.

“It’s an indication to Ghanaians that we heard you on all the feedback that was given when we were in government,” he stated, pledging to act on public sentiment moving forward.

As preparations for the upcoming event gather momentum, attention now focuses on whether the NPP can effectively use the conference as a platform to revitalize its support base.

The party also aims to strategically reposition itself for future electoral victories, both at the national and grassroots levels.
