Tragic Helicopter Crash: A Wake-Up Call for Illegal Mining Fight

Illegal Mining

The recent tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of dedicated government officials is not only a heartbreaking loss for their families and the nation—it is also a wake-up call.

These officials were at the forefront of Ghana’s fight against illegal mining, championing initiatives to restore environmental integrity and promote sustainable practices in the extractive sector. Their untimely deaths must not mark the slowing down of progress.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, iterated that this should inspire a renewed national commitment to enforce the laws already on the books and promote sustainable mining as a matter of urgency.

“There should be a renewed zeal in ensuring that the existential threat posed by illegal mining is dealt with forcefully and more proactively.”

Ghana’s dual challenge, attracting investment in its gold-rich mining sector while mitigating the environmental and social destruction caused by galamsey has never been more urgent.

While various policies and programs have been rolled out over the years, including the much-lauded rCOMSDEP (Responsible Community Mining and Skills Development Programme), enforcement remains the missing link.

Too often, illegal mining operations continue unabated due to weak monitoring, poor inter-agency coordination, and sometimes even political interference.

Laws exist, frameworks have been designed, and partnerships like those between the Ministries of Lands, Defence, Environment, and the Ghana Chamber of Mines have been established. But without enforcement, these efforts risk becoming symbolic gestures.

This tragedy must serve as a turning point. It reveals the personal risks public servants face in their efforts to implement policies in hostile and unregulated areas.

It also exposes the deep-rooted nature of the problem, one that cannot be tackled through fragmented interventions or short-term political cycles.

A National Imperative

There should be a comprehensive enforcement strategy: one that targets not just illegal miners, but also the powerful individuals and networks that enable them.

Speaking during consultation with the Review Committee of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), Nana Twereku Ampem III, Paramount Chief of Ntotroso and President of the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, emphasized the need for adherence to due process in the licensing regime.

“The bottom line is this: when licences are being issued for mining within a municipality, the chief of that area must be involved.

“Engage the chief before final approvals are given, so that traditional authorities can play their rightful role in ensuring order and accountability in the process.”

Nana Twereku Ampem III, Paramount Chief of Ntotroso and President of the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs,

He called on the Minerals Commission to adopt this approach as a standard, noting that it would strengthen relations between the Commission and the traditional authorities. Local authorities and community watchdogs need to be empowered.

In its response to the tragedy, the Ghana Chamber of Mines rightly called for national unity and reflection. But unity must be paired with institutional courage. It will take bold decisions to dismantle the economic structures and political patronage systems that allow illegal mining to flourish.

It will also require genuine decentralization, where local authorities are not only consulted but empowered and resourced to act. Communities must be part of the solution, not just as beneficiaries but as custodians of their lands and resources.

Moreover, law enforcement officers and public servants operating in these high-risk areas must be given the security, tools, and protection they need to do their jobs effectively and safely.

The lives lost on August 6 were not in vain. Their dedication to a better, greener, and more just Ghana must now become the driving force behind a national recommitment to responsible mining.

Ghana’s gold must no longer come at the cost of its rivers, its forests, its rule of law—or its people’s lives.
