GPRTU Members Reject Interim Administration Directive

Members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in the Ashanti Region have strongly opposed a directive from the National Executive Council (NEC) to introduce an interim administration, describing the move as unconstitutional and detrimental to the unity of the Union.

At a press conference held in Kumasi, the group, led by a spokesperson, Mr. Charles Mensah, urged the National Executive Council to immediately reverse the decision and adhere strictly to the Union’s constitution.

According to the concerned members, the directive violates laid-down procedures and undermines the democratic principles upon which the GPRTU was founded. Mr. Mensah stated that the process by which the National Executive Council sought to introduce an interim administration was “uncalled for in the constitution guiding the GPRTU.”

He explained that the Council’s decision was reached without the required participation of all members, rendering it invalid.

“The national executives are seven members, and out of these seven, four of them were absent when the decision was being taken. Due to that fact, the decision taken by the national executives is uncalled for”

He added that the Union had already set up a previous committee to investigate issues within the Ashanti Regional secretariat, yet the report from that committee had not been made public.

“We don’t know why the committee report is concealed,” he lamented, questioning the motive behind the concealment of the earlier committee report, suggesting that it was a deliberate attempt to manipulate internal affairs for personal or political gain.

Mr. Mensah emphasised that the decision to impose an interim administration without prior consultation or transparency amounted to a disregard for the rule of law within the Union. He warned that such unilateral decisions could deepen divisions among members and weaken the credibility of the GPRTU at both regional and national levels.

“We are registering a disapproval again for the formation of the interim administration,” he declared. He further explained that the group’s protest was not to undermine national leadership but to ensure that all decisions align with the Union’s constitutional provisions.

Warning of Consequences

Beyond the concerned members expressing their fear that the continued disregard for due process could lead to confusion and conflict within the Union, Mr. Mensah cautioned that if any instability arises from the imposition of the interim administration, the National Executive Council should bear full responsibility.

The group insisted that the national executives should recall the decision and initiate dialogue to resolve outstanding disputes through legal and constitutional means. Mr. Mensah urged the Council to focus on uniting members rather than introducing administrative structures that lack legitimacy.

He also called for the immediate publication of the earlier investigative committee’s findings to promote transparency and accountability within the GPRTU. According to him, concealing the report had eroded members’ confidence in the leadership’s commitment to fairness and due process.

Mr. Mensah concluded by appealing to all stakeholders, including the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, to take interest in the ongoing dispute to ensure that constitutional principles are upheld.

“Bypassing due process threatens the integrity and unity of the GPRTU,” he said, reiterating that the Union’s strength lies in its unity and respect for institutional procedures – warning that any attempt to override the constitution could set a dangerous precedent for future leadership decisions.

The group maintained that their demand for a reversal of the interim administration directive was in the best interest of all members and in defence of the Union’s founding principles.
