Senior NPP Members Have No License For Reckless Commentary – Zaato Slams Frimpong-Boateng

Dr. Joshua Zaato, a Senior Political Science Lecturer and Policy Analyst at the University of Ghana, has issued a scathing critique of Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, describing his recent public denunciation of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as “unusual” and logically inconsistent.

The academic’s intervention comes amidst a widening rift within the party, following the Professor’s recent explosive interview, where he labeled the NPP a “fake” and “corrupt” organization.

“If a junior member of the party could say this, then the party could say that ‘okay this is a floor member thinking,’ but this is a former cabinet member of the party, and also a senior member.

“To say that the party is corrupt without providing single evidence – to say that the party is fake, that is not usual commentary from a senior member of the party and so the party has the right to try to protect its integrity”

Dr. Joshua Zaato, Senior Political Science Lecturer and Policy Analyst

Dr. Zaato argued that while every member has the right to express dissatisfaction with internal processes, such as a primary election, a senior member of the Professor’s standing should not use that as a basis to de-legitimize the entire party institution.

He further noted that the Professor’s failure to provide concrete evidence for his claims of “arm-twisting and bribery,” during the 2023 flagbearership race makes his commentary particularly damaging to the party’s integrity.

A central theme in Dr. Zaato’s critique was the inconsistency of Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s continued affiliation with the NPP. The lecturer questioned why a figure of such repute would choose to remain part of an organization he publicly deems fake and corrupt.

For Dr. Zaato, the Professor’s rhetoric suggests he has moved beyond seeking reform to active sabotage, a move that the NPP leadership has every right to counteract through disciplinary measures.

He pointed out that with the party heading to a crucial primary to elect new leadership, the Professor had a clear democratic avenue to effect change. Rather than launching a media-driven offensive, Dr. Zaato suggested that a truly committed senior member would have focused on the upcoming internal elections as a mechanism for renewal.

Integrity Over Seniority

Dr. Zaato’s analysis provides a sharp academic backdrop to the formal expulsion proceedings initiated by the party’s General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong. The NPP’s statement on the matter invoked constitutional provisions to oust the former Minister, citing his remarks as “inimical to the values,” of the party.

Dr. Zaato supported the party’s stance that senior members do not hold a “license” for reckless commentary and must be prepared to justify their accusations or face the exit.

The lecturer emphasized that the party’s survival depends on its ability to maintain internal cohesion, particularly as it navigates a challenging political landscape ahead of the 2026 electoral cycle. He warned that allowing senior figures to attack the party’s foundation without consequence sets a dangerous precedent for junior members.

“If someone is saying that we are fake and we are corrupt, that person better be able to justify those things if not then they have to part ways. After all, why would they want to continue to be part of a corrupt and fake organisation?”

Dr. Joshua Zaato, a Senior Political Science Lecturer and Policy Analyst

As the NPP moves to formalize the expulsion, the political fallout is expected to dominate national discourse. Zaato’s perspective highlights a growing sentiment among party observers that the NPP is prioritizing discipline over the preservation of historical ties that have become liabilities.

He noted that the party’s future agenda requires total focus, which is currently being distracted by what he termed “unsubstantiated allegations,” from within its own elder ranks.

The University of Ghana academic concluded that the Professor’s refusal to use internal channels for his grievances has left the party with no choice but to purge his influence to save its collective image.
