Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a directive warning Senior High Schools and Senior High Technical Schools (SHS/SHTS) against turning away or refusing accommodation to newly admitted students simply because they arrive with metal trunks, wooden chop boxes or other personal storage containers deemed unsuitable by individual schools.
GES Management disclosed that it had received reports of such practices occurring across some schools, expressing concern that these actions may impose unnecessary financial burdens on parents and guardians who may be unable to afford alternative storage items specifically prescribed by institutions.

Directive Issued To Regional Directors
To address the reported practice, GES Management directed Regional Directors of Education to inform all Heads of Schools to desist from turning away, refusing admission to, or denying accommodation for duly admitted students solely on the basis of the type of trunk, chop box or personal storage container they bring to school.
The directive specified that this protection applies provided the storage item in question is reasonably sized, safe, and does not pose any risk to the health, safety or welfare of other students within the school environment, indicating that the directive is not intended to eliminate reasonable safety-related restrictions altogether.
GES Management further instructed that any reported case involving a duly admitted student being denied accommodation or turned away solely because of the type of trunk, chop box or personal storage container brought to school should be thoroughly investigated, with findings reported directly to Management for appropriate action.

Consequences For Non-Compliant Heads of School
The Service was explicit in warning that any Head of an SHS or SHTS found to have flouted the directive would face consequences in accordance with the applicable standards, regulations and laws governing the Ghana Education Service.
This warning signals that Management views the practice as a serious breach of institutional conduct rather than a minor administrative matter, given its direct impact on vulnerable students and families.
The directive adds to a broader pattern of GES interventions aimed at reducing unnecessary financial burdens placed on parents and guardians during the school admission process.
By specifically targeting discrimination based on the type of personal storage container a student brings to school, the directive addresses a seemingly minor but practically significant issue that can nonetheless result in genuine hardship for families already managing the broader costs associated with secondary school enrolment.

In closing its statement, GES Management expressed confidence in the usual cooperation and support of Regional Directors and Heads of Schools in ensuring compliance with the directive, framing the matter as one requiring collective institutional responsibility rather than isolated enforcement action alone.
This directive follows closely on the heels of other recent GES and Ministry of Education interventions aimed at easing barriers facing newly admitted students, including efforts to prevent unauthorised financial demands during the placement process and initiatives supporting students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
With the directive now formally communicated to Regional Directors, attention will likely turn to how consistently it is enforced across individual schools, and whether any specific cases of non-compliance are formally reported and addressed by Management in the coming weeks.
