Ghanaian-American singer-songwriter Amaarae is poised to make a major international statement when she takes the stage at Primavera Sound Barcelona on Friday, June 5, 2026.

The announcement of her performance slot at one of the world’s most influential music festivals underscores her rapid ascent from underground alté innovator to global pop force.

Primavera Sound, now in its 24th edition, returns to Parc del Fòrum from June 3-7, 2026, drawing an estimated capacity of 75,000 attendees daily. The festival’s eclectic lineup blends indie rock, electronic, hip-hop, and global sounds.

Headliners include The Cure, Addison Rae, and Skrillex on Friday, alongside Amaarae’s set scheduled in the evening. Other notable acts that day feature PinkPantheress, Ethel Cain, JADE, Slowdive, and more.

For Amaarae (born Ama Serwah Genfi on July 4, 1994), this booking represents a career pinnacle. Born in the Bronx, New York, to Ghanaian parents, she split her upbringing between Accra, Atlanta, and New Jersey. This multicultural background deeply informs her boundary-pushing sound, which fuses R&B, Afrobeats, pop, highlife, and the Ghanaian alté movement.

Amaarae began experimenting with music as a teenager, writing her first song at 13 and interning at a recording studio by 17. After studying at Agnes Scott College, she returned to Ghana to pursue music professionally.

Her early work, including the 2017 EP Passionfruit Summers, showcased her skills as a self-produced artist blending Atlanta trap influences with West African rhythms.

Breakthrough came with her 2020 debut album The Angel You Don’t Know, followed by the viral sensation “Sad Girlz Luv Money” (remixed with Kali Uchis and Moliy). The track dominated TikTok, topped global Spotify Viral charts, and introduced her whispery, seductive vocals and genre-fluid style to mainstream audiences worldwide.

Her 2023 sophomore album Fountain Baby earned widespread critical acclaim for its sleek, confident production and exploration of desire, identity, and luxury. Now, with her third studio album Black Star (released August 8, 2025, via Golden Child Entertainment and Interscope), Amaarae returns to her Ghanaian roots while expanding into highlife and dance-pop territories. Singles like “S.M.O.,” “Girlie-Pop!,” and “Fineshyt” have reinforced her evolution.

“Black Star” reflects a homecoming of sorts. Recent performances, including a standout set at Brazil’s C6 Fest in May 2026, highlight her growing stage presence and willingness to experiment with fashion and persona sometimes drawing playful online commentary alongside praise for her vocal command and crowd connection.

Festival organizers and fans see Amaarae’s Primavera slot as validation of alté’s global reach. The movement, which emerged in Ghana’s underground scene, blends alternative sounds with local influences and has gained traction through artists like Amaarae, who proudly carry the flag.

Performing alongside heavyweights like The Cure and Skrillex places her in rare company, signaling a new era for African diaspora artists at major European festivals.

Primavera Sound has a history of championing diverse, forward-thinking acts. Past editions elevated artists from various global scenes, and the 2026 lineup continues this tradition with international representation from acts across Africa, Latin America, Asia, and beyond.

Amaarae’s inclusion alongside peers like Little Simz, Peggy Gou, and Blood Orange highlights the festival’s commitment to genre-blending innovation.

For attendees, her set promises a hypnotic mix of sultry R&B, infectious Afrobeats rhythms, and experimental production. Early set times indicate a prime evening slot, giving her ample opportunity to captivate both dedicated fans and new converts drawn by the festival’s massive platform.

This moment arrives as Amaarae continues touring and building momentum behind Black Star. Industry observers note her sophisticated engineering background, fluid approach to gender and sexuality in her art, and refusal to be boxed into any single genre as key to her longevity.

In an era where global sounds increasingly dominate pop conversations, Amaarae stands as a bridge between Accra’s vibrant streets and Barcelona’s international crowds.
