The Greater Accra Regional Minister and Member of Parliament for Shai Osudoku, Honourable Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo has announced intensified interventions across major roads and flood prone communities to improve drainage, traffic flow and public safety within the capital. The Greater Accra Regional Minister explained that several ongoing road rehabilitation works are emergency measures introduced ahead of the peak rainy season.
Honourable Ocloo listed roads currently receiving attention across the region and indicated that contractors are active on a number of projects. According to the Regional Minister, areas including Liberation Road, Ring Road East, Independence Avenue, Nima Highway, Kaneshie Mallam Road, Spintex Road, Osu Oxford Street and the George W. Bush Highway continue to undergo improvement works.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister also pointed to interventions at Community 18, Sakumono, Ashaiman, Achimota and East Legon are measures to ease flooding and road deterioration. From the Minister’s account, authorities would continue to update residents on progress made on street lighting repairs and maintenance activities across affected communities.
The Shai Osudoku MP further directed Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives to increase their presence within local communities during the rainy season. The Regional Minister stated that emergency response and monitoring activities require direct engagement on the ground to protect lives and property.
“These are not normal times.I therefore charge my MMDCEs to stay alert and remain on the ground. The work is on the roads, markets and within the communities.”

The Greater Accra Regional Minister subsequently praised emergency agencies, sanitation workers and volunteers for supporting flood prevention efforts within the region. She acknowledged the contributions of the National Disaster Management Organisation, security services and district assemblies in managing sanitation and emergency operations.

Meanwhile, Honourable Ocloo appealed to residents to support sanitation campaigns and avoid practices that obstruct drains during rainfall. The Greater Accra Regional Minister indicated that environmental responsibility is central to reducing flood risks across densely populated areas.
Furthermore, Honourable Ocloo explained that road repairs are measures of a regional strategy intended to improve mobility and reduce damage caused by erosion. The Regional Minister added that drainage expansion and road maintenance would remain priorities under ongoing urban management programmes in Greater Accra.
She further encouraged residents to cooperate with city authorities whenever emergency directives are issued during severe weather conditions. From her perspective, public safety depend heavily on coordination between government institutions, assembly officials and ordinary citizens.
Demolition Exercises Gain Support Amid Flood Control Measures
The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Honourable Ocloo, defended recent demolition exercises and sanitation enforcement measures introduced to address persistent flooding across parts of the capital. Honourable Ocloo indicated that authorities have mplemented several preventive strategies before the onset of the current rains.
Speaking on concerns surrounding the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development project, the Regional Minister explained that officials from the Ministry of Works and Housing have engaged project managers on ongoing drainage expansion works. According to her, the sector ministry would later provide detailed updates on the outcome of the discussions.

Shai Osudoku MP also addressed questions regarding the performance of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives during the rainy season. The MP stated that many district leaders have intensified sanitation activities within their jurisdictions despite recurring cases of indiscriminate dumping into drains.
“We should not allow people to do what they like. When rubbish is dumped into drains, the waterways become blocked. That situation creates more danger during heavy rains.”

The Greater Accra Regional Minister further disclosed that performance assessments would soon be introduced for district assemblies across the region. According to the Minister, the Presidency and the Ministry of Local Government are monitoring sanitation and flood control activities closely.

Honourable Ocloo addressed concerns surrounding erosion damage on the Darkuman to Ablekuma road corridor. She explained that local authorities have already been tasked to supervise repair works following the recent collapse caused by persistent rainfall.
The Shai Osudoku MP additionally defended criticism surrounding demolition exercises carried out within waterway zones and unauthorised settlements. She acknowledged that the operations attracted public resistance, though she insisted the interventions have become necessary to prevent severe flooding within densely populated communities.
“I knew I would make many enemies through the demolition exercise. However, people now appreciate why those difficult decisions were taken. The work is being done to protect lives and communities.”

Furthermore, Honourable Ocloo appealed to residents to support flood prevention activities by complying with environmental regulations and assembly directives. The Greater Accra Regional Minister stated that solving the flooding situation requires cooperation between government agencies, local assemblies and community members.
