Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan received a hero’s welcome upon his return to Mogadishu after being denied entry into the United States to officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The reigning CAF Referee of the Year had been named as one of eight African referees to represent CAF during the tournament to be staged in North America.

Hundreds of supporters, football officials, family members and admirers gathered at Aden Adde International Airport to welcome the match official, whose dream of becoming the first Somali referee to officiate at a FIFA World Cup was cut short under controversial circumstances.

Artan had travelled to Miami to participate in a mandatory FIFA training programme for referees selected for World Cup duties. However, despite reportedly possessing the required travel documents, he was refused entry by US authorities upon arrival and was immediately placed on a return flight to Istanbul before travelling back to his home country.

The incident has sparked widespread disappointment across Somalia and among sections of the African football community, with many describing the decision as a major setback for one of the continent’s most accomplished referees.

FIFA Dream Ends Before It Begins

Artan’s exclusion from the training programme effectively ended his hopes of taking part in the World Cup, as attendance at the Miami camp was a compulsory requirement for officials hoping to be appointed to matches during the tournament.

The United States, one of the three co-hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico, currently maintains travel restrictions affecting citizens from several countries, including Somalia. The restrictions ultimately prevented Artan from entering the country despite his official role within football and possessing a diplomatic passport.

The Somali official had been widely tipped to make history by becoming the first referee from his nation to officiate at football’s biggest tournament. His inclusion in FIFA’s referee preparations was viewed as a landmark achievement for Somali football and a symbol of the country’s growing presence on the international sporting stage.

While Artan could have potentially been assigned to matches in Canada or Mexico during the competition, his inability to attend the mandatory training programme ruled out that possibility.

FIFA later confirmed that the Somali referee would not be part of the World Cup officiating team, stressing that it had no authority over the immigration policies and entry procedures of host nations.

The governing body acknowledged the unfortunate situation but maintained that participation requirements for referees could not be altered.

One of Africa’s Most Respected Officials

Artan’s disappointment has done little to diminish his standing within African football. The Somali referee has built a strong reputation over the years and is regarded as one of the continent’s leading match officials.

His achievements were recognised at the CAF Awards, where he was named Africa’s Referee of the Year, becoming a source of pride for Somalia and an inspiration to aspiring officials across the region.

The experienced referee has overseen numerous high-profile fixtures at both club and international levels. He was among the officials selected for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, further cementing his reputation on the continental stage.

Most recently, Artan took charge of the second leg of the CAF Champions League final between Morocco’s AS FAR Rabat and South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns, one of the most prestigious assignments in African club football.

Upon his arrival in Mogadishu, supporters hailed him as a national hero, celebrating not only his achievements but also the resilience he has shown in the face of adversity.

Many Somali football fans believe Artan’s story reflects the challenges faced by talented individuals from countries affected by travel restrictions. Despite the setback, there is widespread confidence that the respected referee will continue to represent Somalia with distinction on the international stage.

For now, Artan returns home without the World Cup opportunity he had worked tirelessly to achieve, but with the admiration of a nation that views him as a symbol of excellence, perseverance and hope.
