GSE Market Value Hits GH¢270.9bn Despite Thin Trading

GSE Market Value Hits GH¢270.9bn Despite Thin Trading

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) delivered a mix of strength and caution as its market capitalisation climbed to GH¢270.9 billion, even as trading activity suffered a sharp slowdown during the latest session.

The increase in market value came against a backdrop of significantly weaker market participation, with total traded volume falling by 72% and turnover plunging by 82% compared with the previous trading session on Monday, October 5.

Yet, beneath the thinner trading activity, investors still pushed the broader market higher, with the benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) gaining 104.64 points, representing a 0.74% increase to close at 14,221.20 points.

The performance highlights a market where price gains in selected counters are continuing to support valuations, even as daily liquidity remains uneven.

Bulls Take Charge Despite Trading Slump

The session produced a clear advantage for the bulls, with 30 listed equities participating in trading. Nine stocks recorded gains, while only three ended the session in negative territory.

SIC Insurance Company emerged as the standout performer, advancing by 9.7% to close at GH¢5.09 per share. The strong price appreciation placed the insurer firmly at the centre of the day’s market action.

TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana followed closely, rising 9% as buying interest pushed its share price higher. Hords also posted a notable gain of 5.13%, while Intravenous Infusions advanced by 3.77%.

The breadth of the gains helped offset the relatively subdued level of overall trading activity.

On the losing side, Digicut Production & Advertising recorded the steepest decline, dropping 3.7% to close at GH¢0.52 per share.

GCB Bank also slipped, falling 2.07%, while Standard Chartered Bank recorded a marginal decline of 0.03%.

The wide gap between the number of gainers and losers suggests that positive price movements were more broadly distributed across the market than the trading volume figures might initially suggest.

Market Capitalisation Climbs to GH¢270.9bn

The GSE’s total market capitalisation increased to GH¢270.9 billion, equivalent to approximately US$23 billion, from GH¢269.3 billion in the previous session.

That represents an increase of about GH¢1.6 billion in market value in a single trading session.

The rise is particularly notable because it occurred during a day when only GH¢3.23 million worth of shares changed hands.

A total of 965,122 shares were traded, generating a market value of GH¢3,229,817.98.

Compared with Monday’s session, the decline in activity was substantial. Trading volume fell by 72%, while turnover dropped by 82%.

Such a sharp reduction in turnover indicates that the latest increase in market capitalisation was driven more by price movements in selected equities than by heavy market-wide trading.

This distinction matters because a rising market supported by limited liquidity can behave differently from one driven by sustained and broad-based investor participation.

Ecobank Leads Trading Volume

Although overall activity weakened considerably, some counters still attracted meaningful investor attention.

Ecobank Transnational recorded the highest trading volume for the session, with 341,523 shares changing hands.

Kasapreko followed with 214,115 shares, while MTN Ghana recorded 188,282 shares. CalBank completed the leading group with 86,312 shares traded.

The concentration of activity in these counters shows that investors remained willing to deploy capital despite the broader decline in market turnover.

Ecobank Transnational’s leading volume position was particularly significant, accounting for more than one-third of the total shares traded during the session.

The strong volume in MTN Ghana also reinforces the continuing importance of highly traded counters in providing liquidity on the local bourse.

GSE-CI Extends Its Strong Yearly Run

The GSE Composite Index’s latest gain adds to an impressive year-to-date performance.

At 14,221.20 points, the GSE-CI is now up 62.15% since the beginning of the year.

Its short-term performance, however, presents a more mixed picture. The index gained 0.73% over one week but remains down 3.79% over the past four weeks.

That combination points to a market attempting to regain momentum after recent weakness.

The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI), meanwhile, edged down by 0.03% to 7,518.39 points.

Despite the marginal daily decline, the index remains 0.21% higher over one week and has delivered a 61.78% year-to-date gain. Its four-week performance remains negative at 3.96%.

The figures show that financial stocks have continued to generate substantial gains over the year, even though recent weeks have brought some pressure.

Investors Watch Liquidity and Momentum

The latest session presents an interesting picture of the Ghanaian equities market.

On one hand, the strong year-to-date gains of the GSE-CI and GSE-FSI indicate that investors have enjoyed significant appreciation across the market.

On the other hand, the dramatic fall in daily volume and turnover raises questions about the strength of current trading momentum.

A market can record substantial gains without enormous daily turnover, particularly when relatively small transactions move the prices of less liquid stocks. However, sustained upward momentum typically benefits from stronger participation across a wider range of investors and counters.

The latest performance therefore leaves investors with two developments to watch closely: whether buying interest broadens beyond the day’s strongest performers and whether trading activity rebounds after the sharp decline.

SIC Insurance’s 9.7% surge and TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana’s 9% gain provided the day’s biggest sparks, while the GSE-CI’s 0.74% advance helped lift overall market value.

With the GSE now valued at GH¢270.9 billion, the latest session reinforces the strength of the exchange’s 2026 rally. The challenge will be sustaining that valuation growth with deeper liquidity and more consistent participation as investors reassess opportunities across Ghana’s equity market.
