Ghana and England will battle for a place in the FIFA World Cup round of 32 when they meet in their second Group L fixture in Boston on Tuesday at 20:00GMT.

Both nations opened their campaigns with victories and know that another three points could be enough to guarantee qualification for the knockout stages with a game to spare.

England arrive with confidence after producing one of the most entertaining performances of the opening round. Thomas Tuchel’s side defeated Croatia 4-2, showcasing the attacking quality that has made the Three Lions one of the tournament favourites.

Ghana also began with a win, although their 1-0 success over Panama was far less convincing. Caleb Yirenkyi’s late strike secured all three points and ended a six-match winless run for the Black Stars, giving Carlos Queiroz’s men a timely boost ahead of a far tougher assignment.

Partey Return Provides Major Lift

The Black Stars are expected to be strengthened by the return of midfielder Thomas Partey, who missed the opening match against Panama after being denied entry into Canada. The experienced midfielder’s availability is expected to add leadership, composure and defensive stability to Ghana’s midfield against one of the tournament’s strongest attacking teams.

Partey’s return comes at an important moment as Ghana seek to improve a record that has seen them struggle against European opposition at the World Cup. The West Africans have lost four of their seven World Cup meetings with European nations, winning only twice.

There are also concerns over the fitness of goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi after he sustained an injury during the victory over Panama. Any absence would be a significant blow for Ghana, particularly against an England side that scored four times in their tournament opener.

Hearts of Oak shot stopper Benjamin Asare is set to be given his first start at the World Cup after replacing Ati Zigi after the break in the Panama encounter.

Yirenkyi, however, will carry confidence into the contest after scoring the winner against Panama. Interestingly, the young forward has found the net after the hour mark in each of Ghana’s last two matches and could once again prove decisive if the game remains tight deep into the second half.

England’s Firepower Raises Expectations

England’s victory over Croatia highlighted both their strengths and weaknesses. While they demonstrated impressive attacking quality by scoring four goals, conceding twice before halftime exposed defensive vulnerabilities that opponents may seek to exploit.

Harry Kane remains the focal point of England’s attack. The striker’s brace against Croatia moved him level with Gary Lineker’s record of ten World Cup goals for England, underlining his importance to Tuchel’s plans.

Midfielder Jude Bellingham is also approaching a significant milestone. Should he feature against Ghana, the 22-year-old will become the youngest player to earn 50 appearances for England. His influence was evident in the win over Croatia, where he scored England’s third goal during the second-half to restore their lead.

The Three Lions have lost only one of their last 11 international matches, recording nine wins and one draw during that period. Their consistency, combined with an Opta win probability of 78 percent, explains why they enter the encounter as clear favourites.

England may, however, be monitoring the condition of Declan Rice, who experienced discomfort following the Croatia match.

Queiroz Looking to Rewrite History

The fixture also carries personal significance for Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz. The Portuguese tactician was in charge of Iran at the 2022 World Cup when his side suffered a humiliating 6-2 defeat to England in Qatar.

When asked about that result ahead of the Boston encounter, Queiroz dismissed suggestions that it would influence Tuesday’s game.

According to the veteran coach, four years is a long time in football and he has learned valuable lessons from that difficult experience. He believes both teams are now in entirely different circumstances and that Ghana are capable of challenging one of the tournament favourites.

History suggests England hold the upper hand. The only previous meeting between the two nations ended in a 1-1 draw in 2011 in a friendly game at Wembley, while the Three Lions remain unbeaten in eight World Cup matches against African opposition, winning five and drawing three.

Yet Ghana will take encouragement from their opening victory and the expected return of Partey. With qualification for the round of 32 potentially on the line, the Black Stars know a positive result in Boston would not only strengthen their knockout hopes but also represent one of the biggest statements of their World Cup campaign so far.
