Young Apostles captain Ramzy Abubakar says the club is determined to make the Wenchi Sports Arena a fortress as they seek to build on the home form that helped secure their Ghana Premier League survival last season.

Young Apostles began their home campaign this season with a 1-0 victory over Basake Holy Stars, responding to their opening-day 3-0 defeat to Vision FC.

The result extended an impressive run at the Wenchi Sports Arena, where Young Apostles have now won their last seven matches, including their only home fixture of the 2026/27 season so far.

Their home form was particularly important during their battle to remain in the Premier League last season.

Young Apostles won 11 of their 17 home league matches, drawing four and losing only twice, against eventual champions Medeama SC and Asante Kotoko.

That record provided a significant source of points as the club negotiated a difficult campaign, and Abubakar wants the team to maintain that strength at home.

“If you’ve been following Young Apostles, you know that coming to Wenchi, it’s either you come and play a draw but you can’t come and take three points. The best you can do is to play draw.”

The captain believes opponents are already aware of the challenge that awaits them when they travel to Wenchi, but insists the players must continue working to make their home ground difficult for visiting teams. “Most of the teams have really prepared. They’ve really prepared and they know when they come to Wenchi, they don’t get it easy,” he said.

Building On Last Season’s Home Strength

Young Apostles’ home record last season was one of the foundations of their survival campaign, with the majority of their home fixtures ending in victories.

For Abubakar, the objective now is to turn that consistency into an established identity for the club. “We, the players, we’ve really been working hard and we’ve assured our supporters to beat any team that comes here,” he said.

The 1-0 victory over Basake Holy Stars was therefore more than just Young Apostles’ first home win of the new season. It was another step in maintaining a run that has made the Wenchi Sports Arena an increasingly difficult venue for opponents.

The club’s current seven-game winning streak at the venue also gives the players a recent standard to maintain.

Abubakar believes the confidence generated by that home form can help Young Apostles pursue their targets for the season, although he recognises that maintaining such a record will require continued work.

The players have already set targets that go beyond simply avoiding another relegation battle. Abubakar says they want to finish in the top seven of the Premier League and reach the FA Cup semi-finals.

Wenchi As The Foundation For Bigger Ambitions

The home advantage is also part of a broader ambition for Young Apostles. Abubakar says the players want to establish themselves as a competitive Premier League side rather than spend another season fighting for survival.

The captain has also spoken about the possibility of Young Apostles eventually competing in Africa, should they qualify through domestic competition. “As players, we are always ready,” Abubakar said when asked about the prospect of continental football.

He believes such an opportunity would bring value to the players while giving the club another platform to compete.

For now, however, the Wenchi Sports Arena remains the immediate foundation.

With 11 home wins last season and seven consecutive victories at the venue, Young Apostles have already built a strong record on their own turf.

Abubakar and his teammates now want to turn that record into a defining feature of their campaign, with the message to visiting teams clear: Wenchi is a difficult place to come and take points.
