King Charles III has joined Americans in marking the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence, extending his “warmest congratulations” to President Donald Trump and the American people while celebrating the remarkable evolution of relations between the two nations from former adversaries to some of the world’s closest strategic allies.
In a message addressed to President Trump and the American people, the British monarch described the anniversary as “a truly historic milestone and a moment of great celebration for Americans everywhere,” while reflecting on the remarkable evolution of a relationship once defined by war but now anchored in cooperation across defence, trade, science, education and shared democratic values.
The message, released as the United States celebrates Independence Day with nationwide events marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, highlights the importance both London and Washington continue to place on what has long been described as the “special relationship.”
“My wife and I are delighted to send our warmest congratulations to you and to the people of the United States of America on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of your nation’s independence.
“We were proud, and honoured, to be able to celebrate this special anniversary during our visit to the United States in April.”

The monarch added that the anniversary offers an opportunity not only to celebrate America’s achievements but also to reflect on the country’s extraordinary journey over the past two and a half centuries.
Central to the King’s message was the dramatic transformation in relations between Britain and the United States.
Although the Declaration of Independence formally ended Britain’s colonial rule over the American colonies after a bitter struggle for independence, King Charles emphasised that centuries of cooperation have since reshaped the partnership into one of the world’s closest international alliances.

He highlighted the broad scope of modern cooperation between the two countries, describing bilateral ties as “unique and far-reaching.”
“Across defence and security, trade and investment, science, research, education, culture and the arts, the ties between the United Kingdom and the United States are unique and far-reaching.”

The King also noted that the two nations continue to confront global challenges together while building on deep historical connections that have endured despite the passage of time.
“Together, we face the challenges of today, and the opportunities of tomorrow. As I said in my address to the joint Houses of Congress, our shared roots run deep, and they are still vital.”

He added that personal interactions during his recent visit had reinforced his confidence in the enduring strength of the relationship.
The message comes as Americans across the country celebrate one of the most significant milestones in the nation’s history with commemorative events honouring the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, the document that proclaimed the United States’ separation from British rule.
Across Washington, New York, Philadelphia and numerous other cities, celebrations are expected to include concerts, parades, military flyovers and fireworks displays marking the country’s 250th birthday.
US President, Donald Trump is scheduled to headline celebrations in Washington, D.C., where hundreds of aircraft are expected to participate in ceremonial flyovers before what he has described as the “largest fireworks show in history.”
Meanwhile, Philadelphia the birthplace of American independence where the Declaration was signed at Independence Hall will host commemorative concerts and public events featuring internationally recognised performers.
King Reaffirms Shared Values and Enduring US–UK Alliance

Beyond celebrating the historical milestone, King Charles used his message to reaffirm the principles that continue to underpin relations between Britain and the United States.
He stated that after centuries of collaboration, both countries had established a partnership based on respect for one another and shared democratic values.
“Through centuries of shared challenge and achievement, our nations have built a relationship founded on friendship, trust and a belief in liberty, the rule of law and the dignity of all people.”

Looking beyond the anniversary itself, the King expressed confidence that future generations would continue strengthening the relationship while defending shared values in an increasingly uncertain world.

The monarch also highlighted an issue that has remained central to his public life for decades environmental protection.
“I also hold a deep appreciation of our shared responsibility to protect the natural world, knowing the decisions we take today will determine whether our critical natural systems will not just maintain the harmony and essential diversity of Nature, but also continue to provide the foundation for our prosperity and our national security for both present and future generations.”

Finally, King Charles expressed optimism that the close relationship between the British and American people would continue to flourish, adding, “as you mark this momentous occasion, my wife and I send our warmest good wishes to you and to the people of the United States of America, today and in the years ahead.”
