Manchester United have confirmed the signing of experienced goalkeeper Karl Darlow from Leeds United on a free transfer, making the Wales international the club’s second acquisition of the summer transfer window as preparations continue for the new season.
The 35-year-old arrives at Old Trafford after an impressive campaign with Leeds United and has signed a contract until June 2028, with the option of a further one-year extension. The move is subject to registration, but Darlow is expected to join up with his new teammates immediately once the formalities are completed.
Darlow brings a wealth of experience to Michael Carrick’s squad, having made 279 senior appearances during his professional career, including 74 matches in the Premier League. Best known for his long spell at Newcastle United, the goalkeeper has also represented Nottingham Forest, Walsall, Hull City and Leeds United.
His arrival continues an active transfer window for Manchester United. The Red Devils completed the £50 million signing of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea on Monday, while the club has also triggered the release clause of Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans as they reshape the squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Experienced Addition Between the Posts
Although Darlow may not arrive as an automatic first-choice goalkeeper, his experience and leadership are expected to strengthen United’s goalkeeping department considerably.
His arrival comes after Andre Onana returned to Turkish side Trabzonspor for another season-long loan, creating the need for an experienced presence between the posts.
The Welsh international will now compete with Altay Bayindir and highly rated youngster Senne Lemmens for the starting role, providing Carrick with increased competition and depth in a key position. His experience is also expected to play an important mentoring role for the club’s younger goalkeepers.
Last season, Darlow established himself as Leeds United’s first-choice goalkeeper, producing several important displays and keeping five clean sheets as the Yorkshire club battled throughout the campaign.
