The Member of Parliament for Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira, Honourable Kofi Arko Nokoe has argued that Ghana’s political development requires a shift from winner takes all politics towards cooperation that places national interest above partisan considerations. He said political disagreements should focus on ideas, policies and decisions that improve the lives of citizens instead of creating divisions among supporters.
Honourable Nokoe explained that the current political environment has created a situation where many citizens view party affiliation as a pathway to opportunities and survival. He noted that such perceptions could weaken democratic values because national development requires contributions from people across the political divide.
Discussing the role of Parliament in shaping the country’s future, the Member of Parliament urged lawmakers to embody a willingness of support to be beneficial policies regardless of which side of the House introduces them. He recalled an instance at the Nzema East Assembly where an individual admitted having useful ideas but chose to reserve them until their political party gained power.

“Enmity is not the way to go. It is about the product, the discussions, the debate and the decisions we make in Parliament that comes to light.”
Honourable Kofi Arko Nokoe
Additionally, Honourable Nokoe highlighted that Ghana’s democracy must be built on values such as respect, discipline and responsible engagement. He referenced traditional principles among Ghanaians, including respect for elders, as important qualities that should guide political discussions and public conversations.
From his perspective, politicians and citizens have a responsibility to reduce hostility and promote constructive engagement across party lines. He observed that members of different political parties often interact peacefully outside formal debates, demonstrating that political differences should not affect personal relationships.
Furthermore, the Evalue Ajomoro Gwira legislator cited Ghana’s support for the Black Stars as an example of national unity. He said the togetherness displayed during football events should inspire similar cooperation in addressing challenges affecting the country.
Honourable Nokoe stressed that successful governance depends on collective effort because achievements and failures within the state affect all citizens. He urged political stakeholders to consider the long term impact of their decisions and work towards strengthening democratic practices.Top of Form
Democracy Requires Strong Institutions And Accountability
The Member of Parliament for Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira also added that respect for the rule of law remains essential to protecting Ghana’s democratic system. He said political leaders must uphold the credibility of state institutions regardless of whether they are in government or opposition.
Addressing issues surrounding governance and public accountability, Honourable Nokoe argued that institutions established under the democratic system must be allowed to operate without political interference. He explained that leaders should not support state institutions only when decisions favour their interests and question their legitimacy when outcomes become unfavourable.

The MP emphasised that accountability serves as a foundation for every functioning democracy because public officials must remain answerable for their actions. He noted that elected representatives receive the mandate to serve citizens and should recognise that their decisions can be reviewed through established processes.
“Accountability is key. If we that get the opportunity to be in politics don’t carry it at the back of our minds that one day we’ll be called to account, then it becomes a problem.”
Honourable Kofi Arko Nokoe
Furthermore, Honourable Nokoe pointed to global examples where strict accountability systems have contributed to effective governance. He referenced countries such as China, noting that their approach to accountability has often been discussed in relation to maintaining discipline within public institutions.
Additionally, the legislator urged Ghanaians to protect the democratic gains achieved over the years because democracy provides a framework for citizens to participate in national decision making. He stated that safeguarding democratic principles requires commitment from political leaders, public officials and citizens.
Discussing the relationship between leadership and institutional independence, the MP explained that democracy becomes stronger when public institutions are respected by all politicians. He added that attempts to undermine such institutions could weaken confidence in the systems created to protect citizens’ rights.

In light of this, Honourable Nokoe called for a consistent approach to governance where political parties apply the same standards to institutions regardless of their position in the political space. He argued that a fair system must remain dependable even when power changes hands between different administrations.
Moreover, he noted that Ghana’s democratic journey has progressed through constitutional governance and peaceful transfers of power. The MP encouraged stakeholders to focus on strengthening these achievements by promoting responsible leadership and respect for national structures.
The Evalue Ajomoro Gwira representative further stated that political participation should be guided by principles that place the country’s interests above personal or party considerations. He explained that leaders who understand the importance of accountability are more likely to contribute positively to national development.
Similarly, Honourable Nokoe urged citizens to demand transparency from public officials while supporting institutions responsible for ensuring good governance. He maintained that democracy requires constant protection and collective commitment to remain effective.
