China’s launch of a communications satellite aboard a Long March 7A rocket failed on Monday evening after the vehicle experienced an anomaly during flight, state media reported.

The ChinaSat 4B satellite was launched from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site on China’s southern island of Hainan, but the mission did not successfully complete its objective. Chinese state media said the cause of the failure was under investigation. “The rocket experienced an anomaly during the flight and the launch mission failed,” the state-run news agency reported.

The failed mission involved the Long March 7A, one of China’s carrier rockets used to place satellites into orbit. The vehicle was carrying ChinaSat 4B, a communications satellite designed for telecommunications purposes.

The incident marks a setback for China’s space programme, which has conducted hundreds of launches using rockets from the Long March family. These missions have included the deployment of communications and internet satellites, as well as other spacecraft into predetermined orbits.

According to Chinese state media, the incident was the first reported failure of a Long March 7A rocket since its maiden flight in March 2020. The rocket’s first launch also ended unsuccessfully after the vehicle experienced a malfunction following its departure from the Wenchang launch site.

Since then, the Long March 7A has been used in a series of missions, making the latest failure a notable interruption in the rocket’s operational record. Authorities have not yet disclosed what went wrong during the flight or at what stage the anomaly occurred. The investigation is expected to focus on determining the cause of the failure and whether technical problems with the rocket contributed to the loss of the mission.

The fate of the ChinaSat 4B satellite was also not immediately detailed beyond the confirmation that the launch mission had failed.

The launch took place at the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in Hainan, a facility that has become an important part of China’s space programme.Wenchang is located on Hainan Island, a popular tourist destination off China’s southern coast.

Its location provides advantages for certain types of rocket launches because of its proximity to the equator and access to open waters for launch operations. The site has been used for a range of Chinese space missions, including launches involving Long March rockets.

The latest incident is therefore being closely watched as Chinese authorities assess the technical cause of the failure. China has invested heavily in expanding its space capabilities in recent years, conducting increasingly ambitious missions involving crewed spacecraft, lunar exploration, satellite deployment and the development of new launch vehicles.

The Long March rocket family remains central to those efforts, providing China with a range of launch vehicles capable of carrying different types of payloads into space.

Investigation Underway

Chinese authorities have not suggested that the failure was caused by any external factor. State media said an investigation into the anomaly was underway.Such investigations typically examine the rocket’s propulsion, guidance systems, structural components and other systems to determine the source of a malfunction.

The outcome could help determine whether changes are needed before another Long March 7A mission is conducted. For now, the failure represents a disruption to China’s otherwise active launch programme. The country has continued to expand its use of satellites for communications and other purposes, making reliable launch capabilities an important part of its broader space ambitions.

ChinaSat 4B was intended to add to that growing satellite network. Its unsuccessful deployment means the planned mission objectives were not achieved. The failure also highlights the technical risks associated with space launches, even for rockets with established operational records. Today’s incident was particularly notable because it interrupted the Long March 7A’s successful run since its previous reported failure in 2020.

Further details are expected once the investigation into the flight anomaly is completed. For China’s space programme, attention will now turn to identifying the cause of the failure and determining what measures may be necessary to prevent a recurrence in future Long March 7A launches.
