Chelsea have completed the signing of Spanish left-back Pep Chavarria from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano on a five-year contract to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The Premier League club confirmed the arrival of the 28-year-old on Wednesday morning after weeks of negotiations, bringing an end to speculation over his future.

The 2021 European champions announced the deal in an official statement, saying: “Chelsea are delighted to announce the signing of Pep Chavarria from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano.”

Chavarria has committed his future to the London club until 2031 and is expected to link up with his new team-mates at Cobham as Chelsea step up preparations for the new campaign.

The transfer is reportedly worth around £16 million, with a further £2 million available in potential add-ons. His arrival represents another significant move in Chelsea’s busy summer recruitment drive under new manager Xabi Alonso.

Welcoming the move, Chavarria said he was thrilled to join what he described as one of the biggest clubs in world football. “I’m so excited to get started,” he said after the deal was formally confirmed. “This is a dream for me as Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

The Spaniard also acknowledged the expectations that come with moving to Stamford Bridge, but insisted he is ready for the challenge. “It is a big opportunity but I am prepared and will work hard to help the team achieve success,” he added.

Chavarria On a Steady Rise

Chavarria arrives in England after spending his entire professional career in Spanish football, gradually working his way from the lower divisions to the top flight.

He began with hometown club UE Figueres in the Spanish fourth tier, making his senior debut at just 18 against CF Peralada. His performances quickly established him as an attack-minded full-back with the capacity to contribute in advanced areas.

In 2018, he moved to third-tier UE Olot, where he immediately became a regular starter and developed a reputation as one of the division’s standout defenders. He made 52 appearances before earning a move to Real Zaragoza in August 2020.

His professional debut for Zaragoza came the following month in a 2-2 draw against Las Palmas. After two seasons in Spain’s second tier, Chavarria secured his opportunity in La Liga when Rayo Vallecano signed him in August 2022.

Four Years of Growth at Rayo

Chavarria established himself as an important member of the Rayo squad during his four years at the club, helping the Madrid-based side achieve consecutive eighth-place finishes in La Liga over the past two seasons.

He was also part of the Rayo team that reached the UEFA Conference League final last season. Chavarria made 44 appearances during the campaign before Rayo suffered a narrow defeat to Crystal Palace in the final.

His consistency at the highest level has now earned him a move to Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea will expect him to provide energy and attacking threat from the left side for Alonso’s team.

Describing his strengths, Chavarria said: “As a player, I love to attack, defend, box-to-box, and I have a lot of intensity.” He continued: “I have a lot of energy on the pitch. They are my biggest abilities.”

Chelsea’s Ninth Summer Arrival

Chavarria becomes Chelsea’s ninth summer arrival as the club continues to reshape its squad for the forthcoming campaign. His arrival follows those of Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Marcos Palestra, Geovany Quenda, Danny Welbeck, Jordan Henderson, Valentine Barco and Emmanuel Emega.

The defender is expected to fill the vacancy created by Marc Cucurella’s departure to Real Madrid during the off-season, giving Chelsea another option in a position that requires both defensive discipline and attacking contribution.

For Chavarria, the move represents a significant step beyond the only footballing environment he has known.

“I have played in Spain all my life, and for me the Premier League is the best league in the world right now. With a lot of quality and intensity, I think that it’s the best league for me.”

The new Chelsea defender will now begin adapting to English football and his new surroundings, with his immediate objective being to establish himself in the squad and help the club compete for major honours during the 2026/27 campaign.

He also reserved appreciation for those who helped him reach Stamford Bridge, particularly his family. “There are a lot of people who have helped me get to this moment and I have to thank my family,” Chavarria said. “They have always supported me and today is only possible because of them.”
