Hopeson’s career spans more than three decades. Born Diana Botchway on August 30, 1970, in Accra, she became widely known as Diana Akiwumi during her peak commercial years before taking the name Diana Hopeson. Her 1993 hit “Winner,” from the album often associated with Yeyi W’aye Daa, earned her an ECRAG Award and international attention, including a BBC interview.
The song and others from that era, such as “Onyame Ye Odomfo,” remain staples in Ghanaian gospel circles. Between 1993 and 1994, she reportedly sold thousands of cassettes monthly, reflecting the massive popularity of her early work.
