GSE Losers Outnumber Gainers Sixfold in Fresh Selloff

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) endured another difficult trading session as selling pressure dominated activity, with losers outnumbering gainers sixfold and the benchmark index suffering a sharp decline.

At the close of trading, 28 listed equities participated in transactions, but only two stocks managed to record price gains. In contrast, 12 equities ended the session in negative territory, highlighting the broad weakness that confronted investors during the day.

The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) dropped by 268.24 points, representing a 1.83% decline, to close at 14,353.16 points.

The latest decline adds to the market’s recent weakness. The index has now recorded a 3.26% loss over the past week and a 5.61% decline over four weeks.

However, despite the recent pressure, the GSE-CI remains significantly higher on a year-to-date basis, with a 63.66% gain.

Access Bank Ghana suffers biggest blow

Among the equities that came under intense pressure, Access Bank Ghana recorded the sharpest decline.

The bank’s share price fell by 9.95% to GH¢22.00 at the end of the session, making it the biggest loser on the market.

The decline came alongside significant weakness in other major equities. ZEN Petroleum Holdings followed closely, losing 9.90%, while Hords declined by 8.45%.

Ecobank Transnational also suffered a notable setback, falling by 4.05%.

The broad losses suggest that selling was not limited to a single sector or a handful of stocks. Instead, several equities across different parts of the market experienced downward price movements.

For investors watching the market’s recent performance, the latest session reinforces the need to pay close attention to trading sentiment as the GSE moves through a period of heightened volatility.

Only two stocks escape the selloff

While the majority of participating stocks struggled, Dannex Ayrton Starwin and Digicut Production & Advertising managed to move against the broader market direction.

Dannex Ayrton Starwin emerged as the strongest gainer, appreciating by 8.33%. Digicut Production & Advertising also recorded a positive performance, rising by 5.88%.

Their gains provided a rare bright spot in an otherwise challenging session.

The significant gap between gainers and losers is particularly notable. With 12 equities declining against just two gainers, the market recorded a six-to-one imbalance in favour of declining stocks.

That pattern points to a session where negative sentiment was considerably stronger than buying interest.

Trading activity also takes a major hit

The weakness was not confined to share prices. Trading activity itself declined sharply compared with the previous GSE trading session on Monday, September 14.

A total of 1,280,301 shares changed hands, representing a 40% decline in trading volume.

The value of transactions fell even more dramatically. Turnover dropped by 85% to GH¢2.79 million from the previous session.

The steep fall in turnover shows how much quieter the market became in value terms, even as several stocks experienced substantial price movements.

Intravenous Infusions recorded the highest trading volume during the session, with 366,832 shares changing hands.

CalBank followed with 206,260 shares, while MTN Ghana recorded 163,639 shares. Ecobank Transnational completed the leading four with 134,030 shares traded.

The concentration of trading in these equities shows that investor activity remained focused on selected stocks despite the broader market weakness.

Financial stocks deepen the pressure

The financial sector was also caught in the selloff.

The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) declined by 2.37% to close at 7,470.47 points.

The latest performance takes the index’s one-week loss to 5.22%, while its four-week decline stands at 6.91%.

Like the Composite Index, however, the Financial Stocks Index remains strongly positive for the year. It has gained 60.75% year to date.

This contrast between strong annual gains and recent losses paints a more complicated picture of the market.

Investors who entered the market earlier in the year have still seen substantial appreciation in the broader indices, but the recent pullback has introduced a period of uncertainty and increased price volatility.

Strong annual gains meet short-term caution

The latest session illustrates the changing rhythm of the Ghanaian equities market.

After delivering substantial gains earlier in the year, the market is now facing a period in which selling pressure has become more visible. The GSE-CI’s 63.66% year-to-date gain remains impressive, but its recent weekly and monthly declines indicate that the upward momentum has weakened in the short term.

For investors, the immediate question is whether the recent losses represent a temporary correction following strong gains or the beginning of a more sustained period of market weakness.

The answer will depend on how investors respond in subsequent trading sessions, particularly whether buying interest returns to the equities that have experienced the largest price declines.

On the face of it, the numbers tell a clear story. The GSE has entered a tougher stretch, with losers dominating gainers, turnover collapsing and both major indices recording significant daily declines.

Yet, with the market still holding substantial year-to-date gains, the latest selloff remains part of a much broader story of strong annual performance accompanied by increasingly pronounced short-term volatility.
