Manchester United suffered another early Carabao Cup exit after Brighton & Hove Albion overturned a two-goal deficit to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory at Old Trafford and book their place in the last 16.

United looked firmly in control after a devastating opening nine minutes, scoring twice in quick succession to put Brighton on the back foot.

Academy graduate Shea Lacey opened the scoring in the eighth minute, giving United the perfect start after combining with Youri Tielemans to put the hosts ahead.

Mason Mount then doubled United’s advantage just two minutes later. The Red Devils capitalized on an error as the Seagulls attempted to build up from the back leaving Brighton facing a difficult challenge before the contest had properly settled.

The early goals appeared to put United in a commanding position, with the hosts playing with confidence and Brighton struggling to contain their attacking threat.

But Brighton gradually worked their way back into the game and began to create more problems for a United defence that had looked comfortable in the opening stages.

The visitors’ persistence finally paid off in first-half stoppage time when Charalampos Kostoulas pulled a goal back to make it 2-1.

With the deficit reduced to one goal, Brighton headed into the interval with renewed belief, while United were left to regroup after surrendering some of the control they had established so quickly.

Brighton Turn the Game on Its Head

The second half belonged to Brighton as they stepped up the pressure and began to dictate the tempo, forcing United increasingly deeper and threatening to complete the comeback.

Brighton’s pressure was rewarded in the 65th minute when Pascal Gross found the equaliser to make it 2-2.

The comeback had suddenly become a real possibility, and United responded by making a triple substitution, bringing on Joshua Zirkzee, Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo in the 66th minute.

However, the changes could not immediately halt Brighton’s momentum.

Just four minutes after Gross had levelled the contest, Brighton completed the turnaround.

Maxim De Cuyper scored in the 69th minute to put the visitors 3-2 ahead, turning a match United had dominated in its opening stages completely on its head.

Brighton then managed the closing stages intelligently, making further changes as they sought to protect their advantage and frustrate United’s attempts to find another goal.

United continued searching for an equaliser and made another attacking change in the 73rd minute, with Bruno Fernandes replacing Mount.

Matheus Cunha was also introduced for Marcus Rashford in the 80th minute as United committed more attacking options to the search for a way back into the contest.

But Brighton refused to surrender their lead.

The visitors defended their advantage through the final stages to complete an impressive comeback and send United crashing out of the competition.

The defeat represents another frustrating Carabao Cup campaign for United, who have now been eliminated in the third round for a second consecutive season.

The Red Devils have not gone past this stage since 2024. Under Ruben Amorim last season, they suffered an even earlier exit to lower tier side Grimsby and the latest defeat means they will once again watch the latter stages of the competition from the sidelines.

The manner of this year’s elimination will be particularly disappointing. United had done the difficult part by racing into a 2-0 lead inside 10 minutes, only to lose control of the game as Brighton steadily increased the pressure.

What began as a night of early promise for United ultimately ended in another premature cup exit, while Brighton leave Manchester with one of the competition’s most memorable comebacks of the third round.
