NPP Didn’t Demonstrate Readiness for 2028 — Political Analyst

NPP Delegate Conference

NPP Delegate Conference

Political analyst Dr Jonathan Asante Otchere has questioned whether the New Patriotic Party (NPP) demonstrated sufficient readiness to chart a new political path after electing its national executives for the next four years.

Speaking on the outcome of the party’s National Delegates Conference, the lecturer argued that the calibre of some elected officers did not, in his assessment, signal the level of change required ahead of the 2028 general election.

Dr Otchere explained that the NPP is at a crossroads following its defeat in the 2024 election and needs leadership capable of presenting a distinct direction. He argued that delegates should have considered whether the new executives could demonstrate the independence and political capacity required to reposition the party.

The political analyst particularly questioned the perception that some of the elected officers were chosen because they could work closely with Flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. His assessment was that loyalty to the flagbearer alone should not determine the choice of leaders expected to rebuild the party and lead its organisational activities.

“At the end of the day, that’s demonstrating to all Ghanaians that you’re not ready to take the reins of power come 2028.”

Dr Otchere further argued that the NPP’s new leadership should be assessed against the leadership structure of its main political opponent, the National Democratic Congress (NDC). According to the lecturer, the comparison is necessary because the NPP would need a leadership team with sufficient political weight to compete effectively in the next general election.

Turning to the chairmanship, the political analyst questioned what John Boadu brings to the position in comparison with NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah. John Boadu was elected NPP National Chairman with 2,888 votes, defeating Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko, Paul Afoko and Samuel Adofo Crabbe.

Dr Otchere stressed that his assessment is focused on the political stature and experience required of the NPP’s national chairman. He also questioned whether the considerations that influenced delegates in the previous chairmanship contest had materially changed.

The political analyst further referenced former NPP General Secretary Yaw Buaben Asamoa and compared his public communication abilities with those of Johnson Asiedu Nketiah. He argued that the party should have placed greater emphasis on political pedigree, articulation and professional experience when assessing candidates for senior positions.

Meanwhile, Dr Otchere questioned the presence of some established figures within the NPP’s leadership arrangement. His argument is that the party’s attempt to recover from its electoral defeat requires a more deliberate examination of the qualities and political outlook of those entrusted with national responsibilities.

NPP Election Process Marred By Delays Despite Smooth Security Operations

Political analyst Dr Jonathan Asante Otchere also described the New Patriotic Party’s national executive elections as largely peaceful despite delays that disrupted the process.

The lecturer acknowledged the role of security personnel and party members in preventing isolated incidents from escalating.

Dr Otchere noted that the large number of delegates gathered at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium created conditions in which minor disagreements could occur. He nevertheless considered the few reported skirmishes manageable given the scale of the gathering.

The political analyst particularly commended the security arrangements deployed for the conference. He credited the security services and the Inspector-General of Police with responding effectively to potential disturbances and ensuring that the election proceeded without major disruption.

“Obviously, the security men through the IGP demonstrated their readiness, and they were able to nip everything in the bud.”

Dr Otchere also acknowledged the conduct of NPP supporters and delegates during the voting exercise. He explained that their overall behaviour contributed to the peaceful completion of an election involving numerous candidates and thousands of party members.

However, the lecturer raised a separate concern over the timing of the electoral process. He criticised the failure to begin the proceedings at the scheduled time, arguing that the delays placed unnecessary pressure on journalists and other professionals covering the conference.

The political analyst disclosed that some media personnel remained at work deep into the early hours of Sunday while attempting to provide continuous coverage of the election. He explained that the situation was particularly demanding for those who stayed in studios to ensure that the public received updates on the proceedings.

Dr Otchere therefore distinguished between the security performance and the organisational challenges surrounding the event. In his view, the peaceful conduct of delegates should be recognised, while the delays should also provide lessons for future party activities involving large numbers of participants.

Meanwhile, the NPP has completed the election of its national executive team following the conference in Kumasi. John Boadu was elected National Chairman, Justin Kodua Frimpong retained the General Secretary position, while Kojo Fosu Boadu, Henry Nana Boakye and Nana Akomea were elected First, Second and Third Vice Chairpersons respectively.
