The Ghana Export-Import Bank (GEXIM) is supporting the expansion of Buntaa Farms as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s poultry industry, increase local egg production and create sustainable employment opportunities.
Through targeted financing, GEXIM is enabling Buntaa Farms to double its layer production capacity from 60,000 to 120,000 birds, positioning the company to contribute more significantly to domestic food production and reduce the country’s dependence on imported poultry products.
At the centre of the expansion is a fully automated 60,000-bird battery cage facility, which is being financed by GEXIM alongside critical working capital requirements. The financing covers the procurement of day old chicks, feed, vaccines, utilities and other operational needs required to sustain the expanded production.
The intervention demonstrates how access to appropriate financing can help agribusinesses move beyond production constraints, scale their operations and generate wider economic opportunities.
The expansion is also creating employment opportunities, with women accounting for 68 per cent of Buntaa Farms’ workforce.
The strong female participation highlights the potential of investments in agriculture and agro-processing to support inclusive job creation, particularly for women who continue to play important roles across Ghana’s agricultural value chains.
2025-2030 Poultry Transformation
GEXIM’s support for Buntaa Farms forms part of its broader 2025–2030 strategic focus on transforming Ghana’s poultry sector through financing that promotes domestic production, strengthens value chains and supports businesses with the capacity to expand.
“Through targeted financing, we are supporting businesses such as Buntaa Farms to expand their production capacity, create jobs and contribute to food security.’’
GEXIM Bank
The Bank’s intervention comes at a time when Ghana continues to pursue measures to strengthen domestic poultry production and reduce the pressure created by imported poultry products on local producers.
The expansion of Buntaa Farms is expected to increase the availability of locally produced eggs while supporting demand for goods and services across the poultry value chain.
In addition to direct employment at the farm, increased production creates economic activity for suppliers of feed, veterinary products, equipment, transportation, utilities and other services required by poultry businesses.
The project therefore demonstrates the wider multiplier effect of agricultural financing, where investment in one production facility can generate opportunities for businesses and workers across several interconnected sectors.
Serving the Domestic Market
For Buntaa Farms, the expansion from 60,000 to 120,000 birds represents a significant increase in production capacity and provides the foundation for the company to serve a larger share of the domestic market.
“The investment is helping Buntaa Farms increase its layer production capacity while providing the working capital needed to keep the expanded operation running efficiently.’’

The fully automated battery cage system is also expected to improve the efficiency of the farm’s operations as the business scales up. Modern production systems can support better management of birds, improve productivity and enable commercial poultry enterprises to operate at greater scale.
Beyond the immediate increase in egg production, the project aligns with Ghana’s broader objective of developing a resilient agricultural sector capable of meeting more of the country’s food requirements locally.
GEXIM’s financing approach places particular emphasis on businesses that have the potential to expand production, create employment and contribute to Ghana’s economic transformation.
The poultry sector remains an important component of the country’s food and agricultural economy, providing income and employment while supplying an essential source of protein to households.

However, local producers face challenges including the cost of feed, access to finance, production inputs and infrastructure. Targeted financing therefore remains critical to enabling viable poultry enterprises to expand and compete.
By providing both capital for productive infrastructure and working capital for day-to-day operations, GEXIM is addressing two of the key requirements businesses face when undertaking large-scale expansion.
GEXIM mentions that Buntaa Farms demonstrates what can be achieved when financing is directed towards productive enterprises that strengthen local production and generate sustainable employment.
The project also supports the Bank’s objective of using finance to stimulate private-sector growth and strengthen productive capacity.
With the additional 60,000 bird facility, Buntaa Farms is positioned to increase its contribution to Ghana’s egg supply while creating further opportunities for employment and participation in the poultry value chain.
The 68 per cent female workforce further underscores the role of agricultural investments in advancing inclusive economic participation.
As GEXIM implements its 2025–2030 strategy, projects such as Buntaa Farms provide a practical example of how targeted financial support can connect business expansion with national priorities around food security, job creation, import reduction and local industrial development.
The expansion ultimately reinforces the importance of financing Ghanaian-owned agribusinesses as the country seeks to build a more productive, competitive and self-sufficient poultry sector.
