The African Energy Chamber (AEC) and S&P Global Energy have renewed their partnership for African Energy Week (AEW) through 2031, strengthening a long-term collaboration aimed at combining energy market intelligence with investment promotion across Africa.

The five-year memorandum of understanding was signed during the opening ceremony of AEW 2026 in Cape Town by NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC, and Christian Nilsson, Chief Commercial Officer of S&P Global Energy.

The agreement extends the relationship between the organisers of one of Africa’s major energy investment platforms and a global provider of energy and commodities data, research and market analysis.

Under the partnership, the two organisations are also expected to produce a new State of Energy in Africa report, with findings scheduled to be shared at the conclusion of AEW 2026.

The report is expected to add a research component to the conference’s broader engagement with governments, energy companies and investors, although details of its scope and findings have not yet been provided.

The renewed arrangement comes as African countries seek capital for projects spanning oil and gas exploration, gas infrastructure, electricity generation, refining and industrial processing.

In these sectors, access to reliable market data can influence investment decisions by helping companies assess supply and demand, pricing conditions, project economics and potential returns.

For African energy markets competing for international financing, the challenge is not only to identify investment opportunities but also to demonstrate their commercial viability to prospective investors.

Data And Investment Decisions At The Centre Of Partnership

AEC Executive Chairman NJ Ayuk said access to credible market intelligence would be important to Africa’s efforts to attract investment in an increasingly competitive global market.

“Africa competes for capital against every other region in the world, and the countries that win will be the ones that can show investors the numbers,” Ayuk said.

He added that the partnership would allow AEW participants to access analytical insights alongside the investment discussions and commercial agreements associated with the conference.

“S&P Global Energy brings analytical rigor to AEW. Locking in this partnership through 2031 means the governments and companies that come to Cape Town will keep getting world-class data insights alongside the deals being signed on our stages.”

The arrangement gives the AEC and S&P Global Energy a five-year framework for continued collaboration, rather than a partnership limited to a single conference edition.

It also creates an opportunity to connect market research with discussions on the conditions shaping investment across African energy markets.

S&P Global Energy provides data, analysis and market intelligence across the energy and commodities sectors. Its work covers factors that influence commercial decisions, including pricing, supply, demand and investment conditions.

For companies considering projects in Africa, such information can help assess whether proposed developments are commercially attractive and how market conditions may affect their long-term performance.

For governments, stronger access to market analysis can inform discussions about investment priorities and the policies needed to support energy development.

However, the announcement does not specify new investment commitments, financial contributions or particular projects that will result directly from the renewed partnership.

AEW Seeks To Connect Policy With Commercial Opportunities

African Energy Week brings together project developers, governments, financiers, energy companies and prospective business partners through investment forums, country presentations, technical discussions, exhibitions and commercial meetings.

Its programme covers oil and gas, electricity, energy finance and emerging technologies, providing a platform for stakeholders to discuss investment opportunities and the policy and commercial conditions needed to advance them.

The partnership with S&P Global Energy is intended to reinforce that role by bringing market intelligence into the conference environment, where participants assess projects, explore potential partnerships and discuss the direction of Africa’s energy sector.

The approach reflects the importance of credible information in investment decisions. Announced opportunities do not automatically translate into financed projects: investors must also evaluate risks, expected demand, costs, regulatory conditions and the prospects for recovering their capital.

Market research can support those assessments, although it cannot replace project-level due diligence or resolve the structural challenges that affect investment across different African markets.

Implications For Ghana And Other African Energy Markets

For Ghana, the partnership is relevant to wider efforts to attract capital into the petroleum industry, develop gas resources, strengthen electricity supply and expand domestic value addition.

Investment decisions in these areas depend on a combination of resource potential, infrastructure availability, financing conditions, policy stability and expected commercial returns.

Market intelligence can help companies and public institutions understand how these factors compare across markets and how changing energy prices or demand may affect proposed projects.

The renewed partnership does not announce a specific Ghanaian investment or a new commitment by the government. Its potential relevance lies in the broader platform it supports: one through which Ghanaian institutions and companies can engage with investors and access analysis relevant to energy-sector decisions.

For countries seeking to develop petroleum resources while expanding electricity access and industrial capacity, the quality of investment information can be an important part of the process.

Yet translating information into results also requires credible project preparation, predictable regulation and effective implementation.

The planned State of Energy in Africa report could provide a further reference point for discussions about the continent’s energy markets.

Its practical value will depend on the issues it examines, the evidence it presents and how its findings are used by policymakers, businesses and investors.

A Longer-Term Role For Energy Intelligence

The agreement through 2031 gives the AEC and S&P Global Energy a sustained period in which to combine conference engagement with market analysis. It also positions the planned report as a potential resource for stakeholders seeking a broader assessment of Africa’s energy landscape.

For AEW, the partnership reinforces the connection between investment promotion and the information investors need to assess opportunities.

For African energy markets, the more important test will be whether such engagement contributes to better-informed decisions and helps viable projects move from discussion to financing and implementation.

The signing establishes a long-term collaboration, but its wider impact will ultimately depend on the quality of the research produced, the usefulness of the insights shared and whether those insights help governments and companies address the practical requirements of energy development across the continent.
