GSE Trades 6.87 Million Shares as MTN Ghana Leads Volume

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) recorded a surge in trading activity, with 6.87 million shares changing hands at a total value of GH¢43.87 million, as MTN Ghana emerged as the dominant stock by trading volume despite suffering a sharp decline in its share price.

Data from the latest trading session showed that total volume increased by 4% compared with the previous trading day on Wednesday, October 14, while turnover surged by 232%. The significant increase in the value of shares traded points to a considerably more active market, even as investors faced mixed price movements across listed equities.

However, the stronger trading activity did not translate into gains for the broader market. The benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) shed 201.20 points, representing a 1.4% decline, to close at 14,167.00 points.

The session highlighted the contrasting forces shaping Ghana’s equity market, where substantial trading activity, gains in selected stocks and continued long-term market growth coexisted with fresh selling pressure on major equities.

MTN Ghana Dominates Trading Despite Share Price Decline

MTN Ghana stood out as the most actively traded stock during the session, recording approximately 6.34 million shares out of the 6.87 million shares traded across the exchange.

The telecommunications giant’s volume significantly exceeded that of its closest competitors, underlining its continued importance to trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange.

CalBank followed with 134,169 shares traded, while Ecobank Transnational recorded 93,297 shares. Dannex Ayrton Starwin Pharmaceuticals completed the leading group with 79,029 shares changing hands.

Despite attracting the highest trading volume, MTN Ghana experienced a 3.98% decline in its share price. The stock ranked among the session’s biggest losers, demonstrating that high trading activity does not necessarily translate into positive price performance.

The combination of substantial volume and a falling share price is a notable feature of the session. However, trading figures alone do not establish whether the decline resulted from institutional selling, profit-taking or other investor decisions.

MTN Ghana’s performance nevertheless placed the stock at the centre of the day’s market activity, with its trading volume accounting for the overwhelming majority of shares exchanged.

Turnover Jumps 232% as Investors Exchange GH¢43.87 Million

The 232% increase in turnover was among the most striking developments of the session.

The exchange recorded GH¢43.87 million in transactions, compared with a substantially lower turnover in the preceding trading session. Although trading volume rose by a more modest 4%, the sharp increase in turnover indicates that the value of transactions expanded much faster than the number of shares traded.

This divergence suggests that the prices of securities involved in trading and the composition of transactions played an important role in determining the day’s total turnover.

The stronger turnover provides evidence of increased financial activity on the exchange, although it does not independently establish whether investor confidence has improved or whether the market is entering a sustained period of stronger demand.

A total of 29 listed equities participated in trading. Six stocks closed higher, four declined, while the remaining participating equities did not fall into either category based on the reported closing movements.

The distribution reflects a market in which gains were concentrated in selected securities rather than broadly shared across the exchange.

First Atlantic Bank Leads Gainers as BOPP Suffers Sharpest Fall

First Atlantic Bank emerged as the strongest performer among the reported gainers, appreciating by 5% to close at GH¢8.40 per share.

Intravenous Infusions also gained 5%, while Enterprise Group advanced by 4.07%. Kasapreko recorded a 3.8% increase, adding to the positive performances among selected listed companies.

These gains offered some relief in a session otherwise characterised by weakness in the benchmark index.

On the losing side, Benso Oil Palm Plantation (BOPP) suffered the steepest decline, dropping 6.67% to close at GH¢70.00 per share.

MTN Ghana followed with a 3.98% loss, while Digicut Production & Advertising declined by 2.16%. SIC Insurance Company recorded a comparatively modest decrease of 0.2%.

The contrast between First Atlantic Bank’s advance and BOPP’s sharp decline illustrates the uneven performance across the market. Investors tracking the exchange must therefore look beyond the headline index to understand how individual stocks are performing.

The session also reinforces the importance of distinguishing between trading volume and price direction when assessing the performance of listed companies.

Composite Index Falls While Financial Stocks Index Advances

The benchmark GSE Composite Index declined by 1.4% to 14,167.00 points, shedding 201.20 points during the session.

Despite the setback, the index maintained a positive performance across longer measurement periods. It recorded a one-week gain of 1.02%, a four-week increase of 0.04% and a year-to-date advance of 61.53%.

The figures indicate that the latest decline has not erased the substantial gains accumulated since the beginning of the year. However, continued daily volatility could influence how investors approach the market in subsequent sessions.

The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) moved in the opposite direction, rising by 1.05% to close at 7,489.75 points.

The financial stocks benchmark recorded a one-week gain of 0.96%, a four-week increase of 1.35% and a year-to-date rise of 61.17%.

Its advance, despite the decline in the broader index, points to the different performance patterns emerging between financial stocks and the wider collection of listed equities.

GSE Market Capitalisation Holds at GH¢268.2 Billion

The total market capitalisation of the Ghana Stock Exchange stood at GH¢268.2 billion, equivalent to approximately US$23.1 billion.

The valuation underscores the exchange’s significance as a platform for companies seeking capital and investors looking for opportunities in listed securities.

The latest session, however, presents a mixed picture. Turnover rose sharply, MTN Ghana dominated trading volume, selected stocks recorded notable gains and the financial stocks index advanced. At the same time, the broader market benchmark declined, while several prominent equities ended the session in negative territory.

The next trading sessions will help determine whether the increase in turnover signals sustained market participation or represents a temporary spike in activity.

With the Composite Index still up 61.53% year to date, the exchange retains substantial accumulated gains. Yet the latest decline demonstrates that strong annual performance does not eliminate the possibility of short-term setbacks.

Investors will be watching trading volumes, individual stock movements and the direction of both market indices to assess whether the GSE can regain upward momentum after the latest pullback.
