Asante Kotoko returned to winning ways in the Ghana Premier League with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Young Apostles at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday, while FC Samartex 1996 handed Medeama SC their first defeat of the 2026/27 campaign on matchday seven.
The Porcupine Warriors bounced back from their 1-0 defeat to Swedru All Blacks FC last weekend to claim their third victory of the season and move into the top half of the league table.
After a tightly contested opening 70 minutes, Kotoko finally broke the deadlock through Hubert Gyau, who finished off an excellent team move to put the hosts ahead.
Patrick Asiedu initiated the move with a surging run down the left flank, beating his marker before delivering a perfectly weighted cut-back for Gyau to convert in the 70th minute.
The hosts doubled their advantage 12 minutes later through Cameroonian forward Solomon Nsor-Asaah, who came on in the first half to replace the injured Emmanuel Mamah.

Nsor-Asaah made the most of an excellent setup from right-back Emmanuel Sanja, who produced a fine run before teeing up the number 23 to slot home and give Kotoko a comfortable cushion.
Young Apostles managed to pull a goal back in stoppage time, but their late effort proved insufficient to deny Kotoko all three points.
The victory provides a timely boost for the Kumasi-based side, who have endured inconsistent results in the opening weeks of the campaign.
Kotoko have now recorded three wins from seven matches and maintained their unbeaten record at home against Young Apostles since the latter’s promotion to the top flight two seasons ago.
Young Apostles, meanwhile, have suffered their fifth defeat in seven league matches and remain in the relegation zone with six points.
Samartex End Medeama’s Unbeaten Start
FC Samartex 1996 delivered one of Sunday’s standout results, defeating Medeama SC 2-1 at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena in Samreboi to bring the defending champions’ unbeaten run to an end.
The result handed Medeama their first league defeat of the season and strengthened Samartex’s position among the leading contenders after seven rounds of matches.

Both sides had entered the encounter looking to maintain their strong starts, but Samartex ultimately secured all three points on home soil.
Medeama, Hearts of Oak and Samartex are now level on 14 points after seven matches, setting up an increasingly competitive race at the top of the Ghana Premier League standings.
Elsewhere, Swedru All Blacks FC continued their impressive form with a 2-0 victory over Karela United FC at Swedru Stadium.
Basake Holy Stars FC also claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Bechem United FC at the AAK II Sports Arena, while Aduana FC secured the same victory against FC AshantiGold 04 at the Nana Agyemang Badu I Park in Dormaa.
Debibi United Claim Second Victory
Debutants Debibi United returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over the 2024-25 champions Bibiani Gold Stars SC at Debibi Presby Park.
The result marked only their second win of the campaign after three consecutive defeats, providing a welcome boost as they continue adjusting to life in the top flight.
Port City FC and Dreams FC shared the points after playing out a 1-1 draw at the Nana Boameng Darko II Stadium in Kukurantumi.
The draw denied both teams the opportunity to claim maximum points as the league’s middle and lower positions continued to take shape.
With seven matchdays completed, the Ghana Premier League is developing into a closely contested competition, with the leading sides separated by narrow margins and several teams still searching for consistency.
For Kotoko, Sunday’s victory offers an opportunity to build momentum, while Medeama will be eager to respond after suffering their first setback of the season.
