The University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), has denied suspending one of its students seen in a viral video twerking in a revealing bodysuit.

The University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), has denied suspending one of its students seen in a viral video twerking in a revealing bodysuit.

Mirabel Obi, a first-year medical laboratory student, was filmed as she twerked during a dance competition in one of the school’s hostels on October 28, 2021. In the viral video, the school’s Dean of Affairs was also seen threatening to ensure that she is expelled for bringing shame to humanity and womanhood.

In a statement released by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Okwun Omeaku it noted that it does not “condone acts of indecency and other morally reprehensible behavior” from their students.

”Our degrees and certificates are awarded only to those who have been found worthy in character and in learning. Against the backdrop of mixed reactions on the video, it is important to clarify that the university has neither suspended the student nor pronounced any punishment on account of the incident”.

The management said it has set up a panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, adding that further action would be guided by the report of the panel.

The school authorities urged the general public to disregard reports that the student has been suspended. It also stated that the public should ignore any comment suggesting a pre-determined punishment for the student.

It can be recalled that Mirabel Obi took to her Instagram page on Sunday, 31st October 2021, to clear the air on her alleged expulsion.

According to her, it is no news that a female UNN student was expelled from the school after supposedly “stripping” to win an amount of money in a dance competition.

“Normally I would let this slide because I am not clout chasing, and I owe no one an explanation. But I’m tired of seeing different fake news on the story and at this moment, I feel it is pertinent to address this issue publicly”.

Mirabel then clarified that the prize was N30,000 and not N10,000 as earlier alleged. She indicated that the competition was for a concert awareness in the school.

“I have watched a lot of girls compete in the past and what they wore was nothing better than mine. It was equivalent to what I wore and sometimes worse. Because after all, we feel we are dancing in front of our fellow females, but then I feel the amount I made was the reason for the video going viral”.

She further noted that she doesn’t know how the Dean of Student Affairs got hold of the video and what was said to the Dean to make him react in so much anger to even decide to expel her from the school. According to Mirabel, she “was not and was never expelled”, since “we all know that you cannot expel a student on the ground of twerking”.

“We were all dancing in front of the girls’ hostel, and there was never a place that twerking is violating the school rules and regulations. Twerking has nothing to do with my academics because you can’t even make it to be a medical student in UNN without crossing 300 and above in your JAMB. I am still very serious and I know how to balance my social/academic life”.

Meanwhile, Mirabel Obi in a recent interview with local media said she was harassed by the school authorities.

Speaking on the alleged harassment, she said, “I was only harassed without being heard from. The authorities badged into my hostel and ransacked my properties.

“Ever since then, I have faced so much humiliation, I don’t even know how to come out anymore. I keep wondering if it was really worth it. A lot of my properties have been damaged and some are nowhere to be found. Like how do you invade someone’s privacy?”
