Telecommunication giant, MTN Ghana, has rewarded 200 Mobile Money businesses for their loyalty and commitment towards the brand and its growth in the country.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Eli Hini, the General Manager for MTN Mobile Money Services, expressed his delight in rewarding the mobile money agents, merchants and distributors, stating that the company considers them as lifeline to the growth of the mobile money service and MTN Ghana’s business development in the country.

The 200 MoMo partners were made up of 100 Agents, 60 Merchants and 40 Mobile Money Agents in the South-West sector of the country, as they received various packages.

Mr Letsu Lawson, Chief Executive Officer of Lawson Ventures at Kasoa, in the Central Region, took the ultimate prize of a brand new Nissan SUV.

Other winners also received prizes including, motorbikes and television sets.

War Against Momo Fraud

The General Manager for Mobile Money Services, urged all of its partners and customers to remain vigilant in the fight against fraud in the sector.

Mr Hini noted that, as part of the company’s efforts to help in the fight against mobile money (momo) fraud, MTN Ghana has implemented two major interventions. These interventions are: the identification (ID) presentation for cash-out service and effective collaboration with stakeholders to Block phones and chips used for such crimes.

The General Manager asserted that, despite these challenges, some vendors were themselves flouting the above directives. That notwithstanding, he noted that the project has been largely successful.

“We have seen a decline in MoMo fraud cases because of such interventions.”

Mr Hini

Mr Hini encouraged the awardees, saying MTN Ghana values the contribution of all agents and would continue to recognize their efforts. He added, “We could not have come this far without your continuous support, hard work and commitment, you all deserve commendation.”

Mr Hini further charged them to strive hard to maintain honest commission levels than cut corners, which could lead to the termination of contracts.

MTN Ghana Always Rewards Hardwork

He disclosed that since 2014, MTN has been recognizing the hard works and significant contributions of over 1500 agents and merchants which has given meaning to the digitization and cash-lite agenda.

Mr Hini stated that though the Coronavirus pandemic made things difficult for not only MTN, but other companies, he believes the partners of the company proved to be tougher despite the challenges imposed by the devastating disease.

“In spite of the challenging moments, you still demonstrated your commitment to grow the business by working to exceed the targets set for the year. The significance of your contribution to curb the spread of COVID 19 cannot be overemphasized”.

Mr Hini

On the criteria used for the selection, Mr Hini explained that, “the selection of the award winners was based on volume of transactions, value of transactions and adherence to laid down rules and regulations. After a review and assessment of the performance of both agents and merchants”.

While congratulating the agents, Mr. Eli Hini highlighted some negative behaviors of some agents.

“While congratulating the award winners, I would like to also emphasize on one negative behavior observed among some agents during the year; that is, cash in fraud, where some agents created false/fake cash-in transactions to earn undeserved commissions”.
