Majority Chief Whip in parliament, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has revealed that his side is expectant that the Speaker, Alban Bagbin, will admit the motion to investigate the circumstances leading to the death of the late President John Evans Atta-Mills.

According to him, the majority is determined to find out and subsequently debate in the House, matters surrounding the late President’s death.

His comments follow alleged claims that two out of four NPP Members of Parliament who filed a private member’s motion to probe the death of the late President Evans Atta-Mills have denied assenting their signatures to the said motion.

In response to a claim by the Deputy Minority Chief Whip who asserted that two NPP MPs have denied being co-sponsors of the private motion, Frank Annoh-Dompreh noted that the Majority is not concerned about the actions of the opposition NDC, but rather, being rational in seeking for a probe into Atta-Mills’ death.

“If indeed it’s the case, they should allow those who say they are not aware but their names have been published to come and speak to this. I can understand them, it’s a knee-jerk reaction, we are focused, we are expectant that the Speaker will admit this motion and then we will debate it. We are being rational, so they should stop being emotional about a call to probe the late Prof’s death”.

In an earlier interview, Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, alleged that MP for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku and Tema Central MP, Nii Noi Nortey, whose names were amongst MPs who filed a private member’s motion to probe the death of the late President Evans Atta-Mills, have denied assenting their signature to the said motion.

Call for probe into former President’s death

The Deputy Minority Chief Whip explained that based on his interactions with the two MPs, it suggested that their names were being used without their consent to file the motion.

According to Ahmed Ibrahim, in a bid to ascertain the veracity of the matter, he sought to confirm with the office of the Speaker and despite the fact that the two MPs had their names on the motion, their signatures were missing from the motion filed.

“You were there when I asked the Honourable MP, Nii Noi, who categorically stated that he has no knowledge of the motion and therefore they’ve written to their leadership to take their names out of that motion and before I spoke to Nii Noi, I called Honourable Davis Ansah Opoku, the MP for Mpraeso, he also was categorical that he has no knowledge of such a motion and that somebody used their names [he and Nii Noi].

Mr Ibrahim indicated that he followed up with the Speaker’s office to go and have a look at those who signed or appended their names to the motion. Following this, he expressed that “the names Davis Ansah Opoku, Nii Noi, Habib Ibrahim and Annoh-Dompreh” were on the motion, however, it was only the signature of Frank Annoh-Dompreh that was appended to the motion.

“The three other MPs did not sign which confirmed the statement being made by the MP for Mpraeso and Tema Central that they did not append their signature to any motion”.
