According to the Ghana Medical Journal, the major causes of death in the country for the past few decades, have shifted from predominantly communicable diseases to a combination of communicable and chronic non- communicable diseases.

Diseases such as hypertension, stroke and cancer have become the main causes of death in our country for the past ten years, according to the journal, and Ghanaians are therefore cautioned to be on the lookout for non-communicable disease. This is because, cases regarding these diseases are likely to go up and as they do, the number of deaths resulting from these diseases also increase.

Individuals suffering from such health complications are being advised to abstain from self- medication and seek proper healthcare from cooperate health centers. Communicable diseases such as malaria and typhoid are diseases that individuals, contract from one another, while non communicable diseases affect the lifestyle of those it affects.

Mr. Wisdom Amegbletor, Chief Executive Officer of the New Crystal Hospital, disclosed that 43% of all deaths in Ghana are linked to non-communicable diseases and the figure is about 90,000 each year, saying that this figure is likely to rise up soon. According to him the Western countries have a higher rate of deaths as compared to Ghana with a percentage of 71.

Dr. Amegbletor explained that, these non- communicable diseases used to be the sickness of the rich and developed countries. He stated that in Ghana, there are still cases of diarrhea, vomiting and other things, and today these non- communicable diseases are becoming part of their health nuisances. He also mentioned that the health facilities in the country are not up to stretch, and this is going to place a lot of burden on the system.

“Very soon if we’re not careful we will even go pass their 71 because they have better health infrastructure, we do not have so we might be going to maybe 80%, 90% and then we’ll be decimating the population. Once our population is gone, we’re finished.”

Mr. Amegbletor explained that once majority or the entire Ghanian populace contract these non-communicable diseases, the country is going to run down because of its lack of healthy citizens, and even the “IMF can’t save us.”

Ashaiman’s MCE Municipality Commends Management

“I want to thank you and your team. I want to thank everybody who has also contributed to bring this facility to this state, I’m sure this time, reference will not be one way to Tema or to 37 and others. This time reference will come from those places to Ashaiman.”

Albert Okyere

Mr. Okyere stated that, if more referrals came from other hospitals to Ashaiman, it was going to change the kind of perception that people had about the community concerning notoriety and other social vices.
