Ablekuma North Disputes: Ewurabena Bemoans Attempts of Manipulation by Opposition

Madam Ewurabena Aubyn, Parliamentary Candidate National Democratic Congress (NDC)

The parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ablekuma North Constituency, Madam Ewurabena Aubyn, expressed worry over attempts of manipulation by the opposition NPP and the challenges her party faced regards to the Ablekuma North Constituency in the 2024 general elections.

 She began by highlighting the difficulties they encountered, particularly with the Electoral Commission (EC), which seemed evasive in its operations. She stated;

“We spent 2 days and nights at our constituency collation center tabulating figures and results. Simply because the EC perhaps weren’t straightforward with us.”

This prolonged process, according to Madam Aubyn, was marked by underhanded tactics, such as the sneaking in of pink sheets favoring the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

She pointed out that the tensions escalated when the EC began announcing figures that did not correspond with the polling station results. She added;

“Grassroots and supporters out there heard some votes, and they thought, why did they mention some strange figures that we are all coming from the polling station?”

“Unfortunately, in the course of the collation at their constituency, a group of people bashed in from nowhere. We heard chants outside, etcetera.”

During the chaos, the NDC lost some of their vital documents, particularly the pink sheets, which are essential for validating the election results. She emphasized; ”But then we had already collated our results.” She lamented;

“If the EC had made it known to us that we could use scan sheets or, socks on our phones to confirm that we had x results, we would have done that long time ago.”

Meanwhile, the aftermath of the elections left Madam Aubyn and her team disheartened by the manipulations and apparent attempts to overturn the results. She emphasized;

“Issues in relation to Ablekuma North and collation; It’s been pretty frustrating, disappointing, nauseating, it’s been awful.”

Madam Aubyn criticized the NPP and the EC for what she perceived as deliberate efforts to subvert the will of the people.

“We’ve been back and forth. And so, on the 10th December, after some 219 polling stations and with the NPP claiming they did not have pink sheets at all to tender, and the EC also losing its electoral materials, they didn’t have much of a choice than to declare with what was substantive or what they had handy. And that’s how I was declared on the 10th of December.”

Criticism of Opponent’s Behavior, A Fight for Integrity

Madam Aubyn did not hold back in criticizing her opponent, whom she accused of being unable to accept defeat and engaging in questionable practices throughout the campaign.

 She accused the former MP of entitlement and misbehavior, highlighting the electorate’s desire for change after years of NPP dominance. She added;

“That woman for want of a better word, I don’t want to call her con woman, but we live in the constituency. She’s been with us for years, and so we know her games.

“If she claims she won the elections, why did she go about the constituency taking back gifts and goodies she had given to entice voters in the first place?”

Madam Ewurabena Aubyn’s account of the Ablekuma North elections sheds light on the challenges faced by the NDC in ensuring a transparent and fair process.

Her perseverance in the face of adversity underscores the importance of vigilance and resilience in safeguarding democratic principles.

The optimism she had with her earlier Victory as the MP – Elect for the Ablekuma North despite the challenges, reflects her faith in the electorate’s demand of change and accountability.
