Mahama Pledges Utilization Of Gold Mining Proceeds For Local Development In Adansi

John Dramani Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to ensure that the proceeds from gold mining in the Adansi area are channelled towards local development initiatives.

During his address to the people of Adansi in the Ashanti Region as part of his Building Ghana Tour, the National Democratic Congress flagbearer for the 2024 general elections highlighted the significant revenue generated by gold mining and expressed concern that the community had not witnessed corresponding improvements in living conditions.

Mr Mahama drew a parallel between the Adansi area and Johannesburg, emphasising that despite the abundance of gold in the Adansi community, there has been a lack of development compared to regions with similar resources.

The commitment to using mining proceeds for local development according to the National Democratic Congress flagbearer for the 2024 general elections aligns with his vision for equitable distribution of resources and economic benefits for all Ghanaians.

“So we will agree so that any profit that is made out of the gold will be used to develop the community so that others will see what is happening here.”

Again, Mr Mahama while speaking about the development of mining in Obusai pointed out that the National Democratic Congress administration played a key role in the redevelopment of the Obuasi mine.

Former President John Dramani Mahama further asserted that the National Democratic Congress under his leadership made significant efforts to improve the production capacity of the Ashanti Gold Fields.

According to the National Democratic Congress flagbearer for the 2024 general elections, the successful story of the Ashanti Gold Field cannot be written without the National Democratic Congress administration under his leadership.

“When I was president in 2014, we saw that Ashanti Gold was not producing enough gold like before and other mining companies were even producing more.  So they came to me with an amendment program of mining operations and asked for a new place to mine for more gold with the approval of the government.

“I agreed to this and when I left office, they were 60% done. So we started it and that is what the current government came to continue. So it’s because of the work we did, that’s why Anglo gold is successful”.

Moreover, former President John Dramani Mahama commenting on the 2024 general elections stressed the importance of peace during the upcoming elections and further stated that the National Democratic Congress under his leadership is very committed to ensuring that the democratic process is conducted fairly and peacefully.

Mr Mahama made it clear that the National Democratic Congress would not do anything that would jeopardize the peace and stability of the country during the upcoming elections.

“Let us all promise to follow the law to avoid any violence. If there is no violence, I believe the NDC will win the elections. I thank you all for receiving us warmly here.”

The former President’s remarks during the Building Ghana Tour reflect his ongoing efforts to engage with communities, address concerns, and outline the National Democratic Congress’s stance on critical issues, including responsible resource utilisation and peaceful democratic processes.
