NPP, NDC

Recent polling data from Global InfoAnalytics has revealed a shifting political landscape with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) gaining traction in several key regions while the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) experiences a decline in support.

The Ashanti Region, traditionally considered an NPP stronghold, now shows both major parties almost neck and neck in terms of party affiliation.

The poll results indicated that 38% of respondents identify with the NDC, while 37% align with the NPP.

Floating voters make up 12%, other parties account for 3%, and 10% of respondents declined to disclose their preference.

“The poll also shows that the majority of male voters support NDC, 37%, and 35% support NPP. Among female voters in the region, the parties are near parity with NPP holding a slight lead, 39% compared to NDC’s 38%.”

Among young voters aged 18-24, the NDC holds a marginal advantage with 35% support compared to 32% for the NPP. Both parties are evenly matched among the 25-34 age group at 35% each.

Educational demographics further reveal shifting allegiances. The NDC holds the majority among voters with a Junior High School (JHS) education at 42%, compared to the NPP’s 32%.

Among voters with Senior High School (SHS) education, the NPP leads with 38% to the NDC’s 37%.

However, the NDC is slightly ahead at the tertiary level, with 38% against 37%. Those without formal education lean toward the NPP at 41%, while only 24% favor the NDC.

NDC Gains Ground in Greater Accra, Central, and Western

The Greater Accra Region is now firmly in the NDC’s grip, with the party securing 59% support.

The NPP lags significantly at 18%, while floating voters also account for 18%. The remaining 5% is split between other parties and those who did not disclose their affiliation.

“On gender, 41% of male voters in the region support NDC, 12% support NPP, and 12% are floating voters. In the case of female voters, 44% back NDC, 14% NPP, and 14% are undecided.”

NPP support among the youth has particularly plummeted in this region. A striking 64% of voters aged 18-24 now back the NDC, while only 18% support the ruling party. Similarly, in the 25-34 age group, NDC holds a commanding 61% to NPP’s 18%.

Educationally, the NDC dominates across all levels. Among JHS graduates, 55% support the opposition compared to 18% for the NPP.

At the SHS level, the NDC leads with 60% to the NPP’s 16%. Among tertiary-educated voters, the trend remains unchanged, with 63% supporting the NDC and only 18% for the NPP.

The Central Region is another area where the NDC has gained a significant foothold, with 52% of respondents aligning with the party, compared to 19% for the NPP.

Male voter support for the NDC stands at 55%, while 50% of female voters also back the party.

The free Senior High School policy appears to have slightly boosted the NPP’s numbers among female voters, though not enough to offset the general decline.

In the Western Region, NDC support stands at 48%, with the NPP trailing at 18%. More voters in this region are now either supporting other parties or choosing not to disclose their preferences.

“The majority of male and female voters support NDC, but the proportion of female supporters is slightly lower compared to other regions.”

Eastern, Volta, And Northern Regions: NDC Expands Its Base

In the Eastern Region, the NDC has taken a significant lead in party affiliation, with 38% of respondents backing the party, while the NPP has dropped to 27%.

Floating voters have increased to 15%, suggesting a growing segment of undecided voters in the region.“Again, 60% of males support NDC compared to 53% of females, re-echoing the trend among female voters and their affiliation to NPP due to free education.”

The Volta Region, historically an NDC stronghold, remains loyal to the party. The latest figures show that 71% of respondents back the NDC, compared to just 8% for the NPP. Support for the opposition is consistently strong across all age groups, averaging 72%.

In the Northern Region, the NDC maintains dominance with 59% of voters aligning with the party.

The NPP, meanwhile, has 24%, floating voters stand at 10%, while 7% are divided among other parties or chose not to disclose their preference.

The overall trend from the latest Global InfoAnalytics poll suggested a growing shift toward the NDC in multiple regions, with the NPP losing ground, particularly among the youth and tertiary-educated voters.

While some regions remain closely contested, the data indicates that the government is gaining momentum in areas previously considered strongholds of the opposition party.

With the NDC steering the affairs of government, the NPP is focused on restructuring and rebuilding its base after the 2024 elections, setting the stage for intensified political engagement as both parties strategize for the future.
