The Youth Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly criticized President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and the New Patriotic Party administration over the alarming high rate of graduate unemployment in the country.
The Youth Wing of the opposition party in a statement released by its National Youth Organizer, Lawyer George Opare Addo accused the New Patriotic Party administration of failing to deliver better governance for Ghanaians despite having access to a large sum of resources since it assumed power in 2017.
Lawyer Gorge Opare Addo further expressed strong disapproval of the reported unemployment rates in Ghana under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s administration.
Commenting on the Ghana Statistical Service recently released data indicating a significant unemployment rate, Lawyer George Opare Addo chastised President Akufo Addo and the New Patriotic Party administration’s failure to address the issue adequately.
The National Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Lawyer George Opare Addo, also decried the government’s handling of the country’s economy and employment situation and cited the discrepancies that exist among the various employment figures presented by government officials.
“It is worth noting that the NPP under the leadership of President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has churned out different employment figures in the past years: the Deputy Employment Minister, Bright Wireko Brobbey mentioned that the government had created over 5.3 million jobs since 2017.
“Mr Ken Ofori Atta also gave a different figure of about 2.5 million jobs created while the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party in his recent address at the University of Professional Studies stated that his government has created 2.1 million jobs between 2020 and 2023”.
Lawyer George Opare Addo
Lawyer George Opare Addo strongly asserted that the mismatched statistics in the country’s employment status by the ruling New Patriotic Party administration reflects a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and downplay the severity of the unemployment situation in the country.
He emphasized that the 1.8 million unemployed graduates reported by the Ghana Statistical Service represent a ‘ticking time bomb’ that demands urgent attention by the ruling government.
Furthermore, Lawyer George Opare Addo accused the ruling New Patriotic Party administration under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for its mismanagement of the country’s resources, highlighting questionable deals such as Agyapa and substantial spending on projects like the ‘National Cathedral’.
According to Lawyer Gorge Opare Addo, the various funds involved in the above-mentioned deals and several others by the New Patriotic Party administration could have been utilized for meaningful job creation initiatives to alleviate the unemployment crisis in the country.
NDC’s Hope Over Despair, The 24- Hour Economy
Moreover, Lawyer George Opare Addo responding to the unemployment crisis in the country recounted the National Democratic Congress and its flagbearer former President, John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to implement its proposed 24-hour economy policy which is aimed at making Ghana an import-substitution and export-led economy.
Lawyer George Opare Addo expressed confidence that the 24- hour economy policy proposed by the National Democratic Congress will create jobs in various sectors, including construction, health, agro-processing, tourism, and hospitality, as well as government services.
Lawyer George Opare Addo thus urged all Ghanaians particularly the teaming 1.8 million unemployed graduates in the country to rally behind the National Democratic Congress and vote for its flagbearer former President John Dramani Mahama to implement the 24- hour economy policy and plans.
He assured the Ghanaian youth of the National Democratic Congress commitment to provide alternative solution to address the pressing issue of unemployment in the country.
The National Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress concluded his statement by reminding the ruling government of its social contract with the Ghanaian people, and further urged the government to end what he termed as “looting”.
