Quad Summit Rescheduled

QUAD summit, that was scheduled for May 24th in Sydney, Has been postponed

As a result of President Joe Biden canceling his trip to Asia, the summit of leaders of the United States, India, Australia, and Japan, that was scheduled to take place in Sydney the following week, has been postponed. The Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed the news to the Public. He added that, discussions may still take place, while the leaders meet in Japan for the G7 summit.

Biden was scheduled to attend a meeting of the informal security conversation with Albanese, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, on May 24th, this month. The meeting was considered as a response to China’s strong stance in the region.

“The blocking and disruption that’s occurring in domestic politics in the United States, with debt ceiling issues, means that, because that has to be solved prior to 1st June, otherwise there are quite drastic consequences for the US economy, which will flow on the global economy. He understandably has to make that decision.”

The late withdrawal comes as the US tries to strengthen its security connections in the Pacific, despite increasing rivalry with Beijing. Biden recently, also canceled a trip to Papua New Guinea.

Biden had planned to visit Sydney for the summit as part of a week-long trip to Asia, which was scheduled to commence in Hiroshima, Japan, for an assembly of the Group of Seven (G7) leaders, along with a brief stay in Papua New Guinea for an engagement with the heads of the Pacific Island nations.

The current debt ceiling negotiations in Washington forced Biden to postpone the remaining legs of his trip, but he will still depart for Japan on Wednesday, a statement from the White House revealed.

Albanese stated that, Quad leaders would rather meet in Japan, where all four members would be over the weekend. He continued that, no date had been set. “The Quad is an important body, and we want to make sure that it occurs at leadership level. We’ll be having that discussion over the weekend,” the Australian leader averred.

The QUAD, formally known as the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, was established more than 15 years ago but has gained more recognition recently. The conference would have been the third in-person leaders gathering for the Quad.

US Indo-Pacific Strategy

The White House issued a statement last month saying, the leaders had planned to address enhancing their collaboration on a variety of problems, including climate change, maritime sector awareness, and emerging technologies.

Observers had viewed the Quad conference in Sydney, and Biden’s scheduled trip to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, were chances to cement US alliances in the Indo-Pacific. As China asserts more of its territorial claims in nearby seas, and increased in the size of its navy, and militarizes islands in the South China Sea, the region has grown in importance for Washington.

Additionally, Beijing has increased its military threat to Taiwan, a self democratically run island, that Beijing claimed as its own. In response for a meeting between US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen in California last month, Beijing started conducting military exercises all around the island.

Biden was scheduled for a talk with James Marape, the premier of Papua New Guinea, and other members of the Pacific Island Forum in Port Moresby.

The trip was a recent attempt by the US to re-new its interest in the South Pacific, a strategically important region usually perceived as having been neglected by Washington since the end of the Cold War. The tour was keenly expected by the Marape government as a possible economic benefit.

Recent years, China expanded its own diplomatic efforts in the area and build strong ties with some Pacific Island nations, resulting in the signing of a bilateral security agreement with the Solomon Islands last year.
