The Presidential Health Advisor, Dr Anthony Nsiah Asare, has indicated that Ghana cannot afford to go through a fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic in case there is a surge.

Dr. Nsiah Asare speaking on the measures introduced by the GHS to prevent a fourth wave of the virus in Ghana averred that, steps have been taken to ensure that there is no new wave in the country.

“We cannot afford a fourth wave. We can all do this together if you are vaccinated.”

Dr Anthony Nsiah Asare

In ensuring that there isn’t a fourth wave, he disclosed that government, through the Ghana Health Service (GHS), has taken the vaccination exercise a step higher in order to get as many as possible inoculated.

Vaccination centres, he stated, are being created close to the people in the communities including market areas to make it easier for them to go through the exercise.

Allaying the fears of persons who are worried about potential reaction from taking the vaccine, he explained that one might experience some weakness and pains which is also part of how the vaccine works.

“If you are vaccinated and you feel slight headache it means the vaccine is working very well.”

The GHS has declared the month of December as the vaccination month to ensure that most Ghanaians get vaccinated before January. The GHS Director-General, Dr Patrick Kumah-Aboagye, who made announcement stated that vaccination was the surest way to deal with the virus.

Commenting on this development, Dr Anthony Nsia Asare urged persons who are yet to be inoculated to get fully vaccinated as a way of protecting their lives and also the lives of others. The Presidential Health Advisor asked all persons to stick to the protocols outlined to tackle the coronavirus pandemic in Ghana.

Dr. Nsiah Asare joined the health practitioners in appealing to persons to protect themselves in order to also protect health workers who are already drained.

“Health care workers are tired and I am one of them.”

Prior to this, the Director-General, Dr Patrick Kumah-Aboagye, speaking at a press conference in Accra stated vaccination was the surest way to deal with the virus. He assured that the authorities are going to scale up surveillance measures at the Kotoka International Airport during the Christmas season to ensure that Covid infections do not increase.

He further noted that the mistakes that were made in December last year which occasioned the escalation of infections in January this year, will not be repeated. And as a result, Dr. Kumah Aboagye indicated that there is going to be a strict enforcement of the protocols at the KIA since the nation is expecting increased number of people to arrive in the country.

The Director General posited that the GHS will ensure that its logistics are prepared and will continue its surveillance to be able to monitor the virus.

He also urged the Health Service to look at isolation centres and also indicated that the contact tracing will be strengthened. Dr. Kumah Aboagye stated that the GHS will engage with religious organizations to ensure that activities done in Christmas are in accordance with COVID protocols.
