Sammy Gyamfi, the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC’s) communications officer, has made a startling exposé, accusing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of trying to pay James Gyakye Quayson, the MP-elect for Assin North, into not running in the by-election.

Sammy Gyamfi claimed in a Facebook post on July 3, that some party (NPP) members threatened to imprison Gyakye Quayson if he were to win a second term, after the NPP was unable to buy Gyakye Quayson’s election.

The NDC’s communications officer praised James Gyakye Quayson for his unshakable devotion to and affection for his constituents, saying that despite numerous obstacles, the MP-elect never wavered in his will to fight for justice.

He described Quayson as serene, self-assured, modest, and fearless. Mr. Gyamfi attributed his (Gyakye Quayson’s) success to the party’s own commitment and tenacity.

“Folks, not much has been said about the relentlessness of the MP-elect for Assin North, without which victory may have eluded us.  They tried to bribe him to back off; when they failed, they threatened him with jail. But in all these things, he was unwavering in his commitment and love for his people. Always calm but confident; humble but courageous; sober but inspiring; meek but fearless.

“His personal conviction and determination to fight for justice against all odds, even at the risk of losing his civil liberties, is the reason we are smiling today. Join me celebrate the First Gentleman of the good people of Assin North, the Old Soldier, Hon. James Gyakye Quayson.”

In a by-election for the Assin North constituency seat, Gyakye Quayson won the re-election with 57.56 percent of the total votes cast. Charles Opoku of the NPP, who won 42.15 percent of the vote, and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), who received just 0.29 percent of the vote.

Akufo-Addo Called Upon To End Prosecution Of Gyakye Quayson

Oseadeoyo Agyeman Badu II, the Omanhene of the Dormaa Traditional Area in the Bono Region and the President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, requests that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo direct the Attorney General to end the investigation brought up against James Gyakye Quayson, the embattled Assin North Member of Parliament.

In order to stop the trial of the re-elected MP for the Assin North seat, he also encouraged the Attorney General to submit a nolle prosequi.

Oseadeoyo Agyeman Badu II said that he urgently pleads with the President of the republic and that if President Akufo-Addo has any involvement in the ongoing trial of Gyakuye Quayson, he (Akufo-Addo) should cancel such a mission.

“The Attorney General should as a matter of urgency file a nolle prosequi to end that particular decision,” he stated. Oseadeoyo Agyeman Badu II noted that the trial of James Gyakye Quayson will not bring any benefit to Ghanaians.

“Honestly, I don’t see the benefits this prosecution will bring Ghanaians. If he is in court, he can’t fulfil his mandate so the president and the Attorney General should do something urgently to end this matter, so we move on as Ghanaians.”

Oseadeoyo Agyeman Badu II

Franklin Cudjoe, the founding president of Imani Africa, also stated that he anticipates the Attorney General to start the procedures to end the criminal trial of Mr. Gyakye Quayson, the Parliament-elect for Assin North.

“This week, I am hopeful that the Attorney General will file court processes to discontinue the shameful persecution of second-time MP-elect Quayson, & commit energy daily to correct the grave electoral ostracization of SALL.”
