A medical doctor and clinical psychologist, Dr. Isaac Newman Arthur, says the social media outburst arising from Sarkodie and Yvonne Nelson’s predicament could worsen their mental well-being and not heal them emotionally.

The release of Yvonne Nelson’s memoir has sparked social media conversations, especially after Sarkodie’s condemning “Try Me” response over their relationship that took place some years ago.

According to Dr. Newman Arthur, who is also the Acting Director of the University of Professional Studies Medical Directorate, the revelation of such subtle issues regarding their private lives have consequences for not only the celebrities involved but their children as well as people who look up to them.

He said:

“One of the most ‘dangerous’ places to express your emotions and failures is on social media. When you do that, you lose control of what people will say or do to you.

“People’s responses on social media can add to the pain and worsen their mental wellbeing. The safest place to heal is in a professional setting with the right professional. They both need to heal. Really, we all need healing”.

Dr. Newman Arthur shared his opinion about the actions of both Yvonne Nelson and Sarkodie.

He said:

“I am not sure exactly why Yvonne Nelson put it out there, whatever the reason was, it expressed how she felt, and also, Sarkodie’s response expressed how he also felt.

“Unfortunately, the masses are divided on who did the right thing. This shows that there was something basically wrong. As for the impact on people, it may set negative or positive precedence on issues regarding sensitive issues like abortion, relationships, trust, and confidentiality, depending on how people will evaluate what was put out there”.

Dr. Arthur expressed concern about the consequences it could have on their kids, especially when they grow up.

He stated:

“Whatever we put out there never goes away. For the kids, it may affect the value they place on themselves and lead to identity crises, anxiety in social settings, and depression if they don’t receive the right help”.

Akosua Hanson asks Sarkodie to redo his song ‘Try Me’

Media personality, Akosua Hanson

Media personality Akosua Hanson called on one of Ghana’s biggest rappers, Sarkodie, to redo a mature and pondering version of “Try Me” in reply to Yvonne Nelson’s affirmations.

According to her, Sarkodie’s ‘Try Me’ is a beautiful song in terms of art; however, he failed to show his maturity and address the issues in the song.

Miss Hanson in a technical breakdown of the song, called it a rap battle made up of three elements. The elements are insults, wordplay, and boasting which resulted in cutting down the opponent.

She explained:

“Battle rap is always vicious. What makes it a punch is that they pull on what society finds painful.

“However, from excerpts I have read and discussions about Yvonne Nelson’s book, it felt like Sarkodie was bringing a gun into what was literally a paper fight…there are so many people who attack Sarkodie all the time, and he rarely responds, but in a case where he didn’t need it at all, he brought it”.

Sarkodie and Yvonne Nelson have influenced trends in the media for weeks.
