Award-winning sound engineer and music producer, Kaywa

Award-winning sound engineer and music producer, Kaywa has revealed that he spends more than Gh¢100,000 in producing and releasing one hit single.

He disclosed in an interview:

“More than 100,000 for one hit single. (Between videos and promotions, which one takes most of the money?) Videos. Sometimes we can shoot videos worth 70,000. Sometimes, some people don’t understand the conversation. You put in a lot of money”.

Kaywa

Speaking on the realities behind the availability of funds, the Highly Spiritual Music boss pointed out that though, many times the money is not available, it is difficult to let personalities he deems talented go, so he does everything to make it work.

Kaywa pointed out that venturing into his line of business was lucrative though it came with risks especially when it has to do with new talents. However, he thinks it’s worth it as some of these talents are too good to be dismissed.

He concluded:

“It really is if you do it well. Check your streaming platforms and ask any artiste that does it pretty well, you’ll know that there is some great money coming in if you are doing it well.

“It’s business but it’s a risk. Putting money in fresh talents is not an easy job but we trust the process. Sometimes, there is no money but looking at the talent, you just can’t allow it to go to waste so you do everything to make it work”.

The biggest challenge in label management is poaching

Highly Spiritual record label’s renowned music producer, sound engineer, and CEO, Kaywa, chose to leave his former signees, including Lasmid and Mr Drew, to God after feeling abandoned by them.

Kaywa expressed his disappointment with their decision to part ways with the label despite investing significantly in their careers which grew them to fame.

Born David Kojo Kyei, in an interview, revealed his perspective on the matter and rather than harboring bitterness or uttering negative remarks about his former artists, explained that he preferred to leave them in God’s hands.

He said:

“I know how painful it can be to invest in new artists only for them to leave when they reach their peak, but that is life. If I should consider all these, I would not sign on any artiste again but one thing I tell myself is that I am building national assets.

“Everyone knows the role I played in the lives of all the artists who left my record label. The little impact I made in their careers is enough joy for me and if they become like the Sarkodie, Shatta Wale, and Stonebwoy, I will take the credit for that. Dr Duncan might not be very wealthy but everyone knows what he did for Sarkodie”.

Kaywa

He described poaching as a major challenge with signing artists.

He further added:

“These musicians are poached by individuals or other record labels that feel they have the money to buy anyone. Most of these musicians will leave when they come with juicy offers.

“I want to appeal to the poachers to rather work with the original record labels where the artistes are signed on instead of going through the back door and convince the artists to leave”.

“I have a policy at Highly Spiritual record label and that is no come-back after exiting. That is not good for the brand, however, we can have a good relationship but you can’t work with the label again.

“The likes of Krymi, Kurl Songx, Yaw Berk, and others still come to my office or call me anytime but as for coming back as a former signee that won’t be possible”.
