Ambassador Kwesi Ahwoi, a former Interior Minister, has urged all Ghanaians to follow in the footsteps of the late President John Evans Atta Mills.

He praised Prof. Mills for his humility in service when he was living.

Speaking outside of the Kumasi memorial lecture for the late Prof. Mills, he declared: “It is all about governance and good governance, that is what everybody picked from here.”

“Humility in governance, those are the theme that ran through the lecture and Ghanaians are being called to emulate the legacy of Mills.”

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, who was contesting as the running mate for former President John Dramani Mahama in the 2020 general elections, also praised the late former President John Evans Atta Mills for the work he accomplished while in office before his passing.

She claimed that Prof. Mills improved education, created roads and other facilities, and shown exceptional leadership.

Speaking at the gathering, the former Minister of Education said that Professor Mills had the support of John Dramani Mahama, who was vice President at the time, to carry out his duties. She used the recent Assin North by-election, in which the NPP candidate lost to the NDC, as a satirical dig at the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). “A word to the wise is in Assin North,” she declared.

Prof Mills Was Modest

Former President John Dramani Mahama for his part, said that his former boss, the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills was modest.

He characterized the late former President as a man of integrity, a quality for which many people would attest.

“Atta Mills was a man of integrity, and all of us can vouch for his integrity, he was a modest man and didn’t need millions of dollars in his house to survive,” Mr. Mahama said.

John Dramani Mahama added that Professor Mills’ qualities are currently in limited supply.

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) said “For those of us who have worked with him closely, we will forever cherish his memory. That is why we continue to celebrate his life every year not because we want to worship him but because his attributes are in such short supply in Ghana today that we need to continue to celebrate him and repeat his attributes so those in public leadership today will learn from the man Atta Mills.”

“Our economy is in crisis, and there are hardships across the land, corruption and theft have become the new normal and not the exception. Impunity has enveloped our land and public officials carry themselves as if they own the country, ostentation has become the hallmark of the people in office and arrogance has become the prime character of the current leadership. If you look at all that is happening today, they were completely contrary to the attributes that Atta Mills espoused.”

John Dramani Mahama

Mr Mahama served as the Vice President to Prof Mills from 2009 to mid-2012. Thus, until Prof Mills died on 24th July 2012.
