Kennedy Agyapong, the chairman of the Defense and Interior Committee of Parliament and Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party, has warned the President Akuffo Addo and the New Patriotic Party administration against any attempt to remove the current Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, because such a conspiracy would be detrimental to the party in power.

The Assin Central Member of Parliament stated that the considerable decline in robberies across the nation is attributable to the modifications made to the police force by the current Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare.

He indicated that despite past disagreements he has had with Dr Akuffo Dampare, he is confident in the Inspector General’s outstanding leadership of the Ghana Police Service.

“If you go to the police headquarters, you will realize that the man (Dr Dampare) has done well… I have fought with him once because he refused to act when the killer of JB Danquah confessed to him, but he has done well”.

“How many times have you heard of armed robbery since Dampare was made IGP? People were being killed and their money was being stolen in broad daylight. How many times have you seen this since Dampare came into office? I have called one of the guys (in the leaked tape) who is from my village and blasted him. We don’t like change”

Mr. Agyapong also highlighted the transformational development agenda that has been pursued at the police headquarters within the short period under Dr. George Akuffo Damapare’s leadership as all good indication of the exempalry leadership and the foresight of the current Inspector General of Police,

“Since I became the head of the defence and interior committee, we have had several IGPs, and this man Dampare what he has done, I don’t think we are being fair to him… Don’t make the mistake of removing him. Under him, the rate of armed robbery has reduced drastically; he has transformed the police headquarters; the place looks so clean and beautiful”.

The lawmaker’s remarks follow public interest in the work of the ad-hoc parliamentary committee formed to look into the purported IGP removal plot by some top police officials that was allegedly caught on camera.

COP Alex Mensah Eyes Asante Bekwai Constituency Seat

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, George Alex Mensah has also declared that he will run for the Ashanti Region’s Asante Bekwai parliamentary seat.

After 31 years of service, he is now formally retiring from the Ghana Police Service.

The Commissioner of Police, George Alex Mensah made this known in a radio interview on Monday 18 September, 2023 that he will contest as the Member of Parliament to represent the Bekwai Constituency.

The Commissioner of Police, Alex Mensah is one of the three key witnesses testifying before the Parliamentary Committee looking into the case and is currently at the heart of the leaked recording plotting the ouster of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
