Ukraine Peace Summit in Switzerland

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on the international community to uphold the principles of international law and the United Nations (UN) Charter to achieve a lasting resolution to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

Speaking at the Ukraine Peace Summit in Switzerland, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the need for a comprehensive, just, and enduring peace, rooted in the foundational principles of international governance. Highlighting the far-reaching implications of the conflict, President Akufo-Addo expressed deep concern over the blockade of the Black Sea, a critical issue exacerbating the global crisis.

“The situation has led to severe shortages and skyrocketing food prices, precipitating a food security crisis across Africa. This has resulted in a surge in the cost of living and a looming threat of hunger and malnutrition over the continent’s most vulnerable populations.”

The President underscored that the repercussions of the war extend far beyond the immediate region, posing threats to global stability and economic security. He stressed the urgency of continued diplomatic, economic, and humanitarian efforts to facilitate a peaceful resolution.

Switzerland, the host of the Peace Summit, is spearheading discussions to foster mutual understanding among states to achieve a lasting peace. The Summit’s agenda focuses on various peace plans already proposed, addressing critical global interests such as food safety, freedom of navigation, nuclear safety, and humanitarian concerns, including prisoner exchanges.

Ghana, recognized as one of Africa’s most peaceful and democratic nations, is participating in the Peace Summit at Switzerland’s invitation. The country aims to contribute significantly by voicing its perspective on the conflict. In his address, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that sustainable peace is built on “open, honest, and inclusive dialogue.”

“The Summit provides an opportunity to bridge divides and lay the groundwork for durable peace by reaffirming the commitment to the rule of law, respect for national sovereignty, and protection of human rights.”

He highlighted the Ukraine Peace Formula, which calls for the cessation of hostilities, withdrawal of foreign troops, and restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, as a crucial framework for achieving lasting peace.

Despite acknowledging the challenges ahead, President Akufo-Addo remained optimistic. “With collective determination and steadfast dedication to justice, a future where peace prevails is achievable,” he concluded.

Swiss Foreign Minister and former President, Ignazio Cassis, articulated Switzerland’s commitment to fostering dialogue.

“In concrete terms, we are ready to conduct a courageous and necessary dialogue, to compare all points of view on the Ukrainian conflict with, as a common framework, respect for international law,” Cassis stated.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began with a barrage of missile strikes on cities nationwide before dawn on February 24, 2022. For over two years, the conflict has raged, with Moscow’s forces making incremental advances after a prolonged stalemate.

As of July 31, 2023, the UN reported that approximately 26,015 civilians had been severely affected, with 9,369 killed and 16,646 injured.

The Ukraine Peace Summit represents a concerted effort by the international community to address the multifaceted challenges posed by the Russia-Ukraine war. The discussions are expected to yield actionable strategies that align with international legal standards and promote global stability. By championing these principles, leaders like President Akufo-Addo underscore the importance of unity and collaboration in resolving one of the most pressing conflicts of our time.
