Political ‘One-Upmanship’ Hinders Ghana’s Progress

Afenyo-Markin's on NPP defeat

Hon. Alexander Afenyo Markin

Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader in Parliament, has observed that there is a growing trend among Ghana’s political elite to engage in a competitive ‘one-upmanship’, fueled by a desire to surpass one another.

He pointed out that this competitive mindset has resulted in strategies focused on outmaneuvering political opponents rather than prioritizing the country’s overall development and advancement.

“Ghana has long been celebrated as a beacon of democracy and stability in Africa, a testament to the resilience of our institutions and the activism of our political class. However, beneath this grace lies an emerging reality: the detrimental effects of our politics”.

Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin

The Majority Leader further observed that while politicians are preoccupied with winning elections and consolidating power, a substantial segment of the population, particularly the youth, is being marginalized and excluded from the benefits of economic growth and development.

The Majority Leader lamented that, as a result, the immense potential of Ghana’s youth, widely recognized as a vital engine for driving progress and growth, remains largely unutilized and underleveraged.

Afenyo-Markin pointed out that entrepreneurship and job opportunities are extremely limited, and even the few that exist are often hindered by various obstacles, making it even harder for young people to access them.

He expressed regret that Ghanaian artisans, often unfairly maligned for their work ethic, are being displaced by artisans from neighboring countries in the construction industry, despite having the skills and expertise. “Even for basic tasks we once took for granted”, he added.

Afenyo-Markin bemoaned the fact that the potential for entrepreneurship is being further eroded as people are increasingly opting to invest in the money market, prioritizing short-term financial gains over long-term investments in innovative ventures and business opportunities.

He suggested that the prevailing negative work attitudes and mindset in Ghana are discouraging potential entrepreneurs from starting their own businesses, as they are often discouraged by the perceived lack of dedication, professionalism, and productivity in the workforce.

Progress Made, Unity Needed For Lasting Impact

Furthermore, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin acknowledged that the government has made significant strides in addressing these challenges by implementing various social intervention programs aimed at supporting entrepreneurs, creating jobs, and fostering a more positive work environment.

He observed that while these initiatives are commendable, they may not be enough to achieve the desired transformative impact without the collective backing and commitment of the political class, emphasizing the need for a united and coordinated effort to drive meaningful change.

Afenyo-Markin cautioned that without the necessary support and collective effort, the progress made by the country over the years will be undermined, leading to counterproductive consequences that will negate the gains achieved so far, and potentially hinder future development.

“The consequences may be dire for our stability. Throughout history, frustrations and disillusionment among the masses, including the youth, have led to significant social and political unrest. The recent Gen-Z activism in Kenya serves as a stark warning”.

“To prevent such scenarios in Ghana, it is imperative that the political class collaboratively take proactive and comprehensive measures to address the underlying causes of public discontent”.

Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin

The Majority Leader also emphasized that the political class must not allow their focus on political strategizing and maneuvering to obscure their understanding of the public’s expectations and needs, but rather prioritize addressing the concerns and aspirations of the citizens they serve.

He appealed to the political class to reaffirm their dedication to a national vision that harnesses the energy and potential of the youth and also unlocks the immense development opportunities presented by the demographic dividend, thereby ensuring a brighter future for the country.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized the importance of political parties setting aside their differences and uniting in their efforts to promote the socio-economic growth and progress of the country, putting the nation’s interests above partisan politics.
