2024 Atlantic Council Global Citizen Award

President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Atlantic Council Global Citizen Award, recognizing his leadership, vision, and commitment to improving the lives of Ghanaians and promoting global cooperation.

The award, which celebrates individuals who embody the highest ideals of global citizenship, was presented to President Akufo-Addo alongside three other distinguished honorees in New York, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

In his acceptance speech, Akufo-Addo dedicated the honor to the people of Ghana, expressing deep appreciation for their resilience and fortitude.

“This moment cannot just be about me. It is about the people of Ghana who inspire me with their resilience, their strength, and their unwavering belief in a brighter future. They are the true global citizens, and I accept this award on their behalf.”

President Akufo-Addo’s words captured his belief that no nation, including Ghana, could tackle today’s challenges in isolation.

“In today’s interconnected world, no nation can stand alone. Our future as Ghanaians, as Africans, and as members of a global family depends on our ability to work together and lift each other up.”

The President further underscored the importance of collaboration in addressing common global threats, including climate change, inequality, and terrorism.

For President Akufo-Addo, receiving the Global Citizen Award was not just a recognition of past achievements but a clarion call for continued action. He stressed that the honor marked the beginning of further challenges and responsibilities.

“Receiving this award is not a conclusion. It is a call to action,” President Akufo-Addo remarked, reiterating his commitment to addressing the pressing challenges that Ghana and the world face.

President Akufo-Addo highlighted the progress made in advancing human rights, the rule of law, and democratic governance in collaboration with international partners, particularly the United States.

“Ghana and the United States have together made real progress in advancing human rights and the rule of law.

“But there’s still so much more we can do and achieve as long as we remain united, especially at this time when terrorism and violent extremism are threatening to submerge West Africa and, indeed, the rest of the world in darkness and tyranny.”

His remarks came against the backdrop of growing insecurity in the West African region, driven by extremist groups and the destabilization of neighboring nations.

The Atlantic Council Global Citizen Award is the flagship event for recognizing individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the global community. Held annually alongside the UNGA, the award brings together world leaders, diplomats, business executives, and influential figures from the philanthropic and social sectors.

The ceremony serves as a platform to celebrate individuals whose work exemplifies the spirit of global citizenship, while also underscoring the Atlantic Council’s mission of fostering cooperation and shaping a better global future.

In this year’s ceremony, President Akufo-Addo was one of four recipients, standing out for his role in promoting democracy, economic development, and regional cooperation in Africa. His leadership has been widely recognized across the continent, with many of his policies, such as the Free Senior High School (SHS) initiative and his vision of a “Ghana Beyond Aid,” becoming landmark achievements.

President William Ruto’s Eulogy

President of Kenya, William Ruto, had the honor of introducing President Akufo-Addo ahead of the award presentation. President Ruto praised his Ghanaian counterpart for his visionary leadership and significant contributions to Africa’s progress.

Referring to Akufo-Addo by his popular nickname, “Addo show boy,” Ruto captured the admiration that many Africans hold for the Ghanaian leader.

“Ask any Ghanaian and they will speak proudly of the free senior high school policy, which has transformed lives by making education accessible to all,” said Ruto.

President Ruto highlighted how Akufo-Addo’s vision of a self-reliant Ghana has had a ripple effect across the continent, inspiring other nations to embrace the idea of self-sufficiency and reduced dependency on foreign aid.

“President Akufo-Addo’s vision of Ghana beyond aid has inspired not only Ghanaians but Africans across the continent to pursue self-reliance and take hold of their destinies.”

President Ruto further praised Akufo-Addo for his bold steps toward promoting African unity, particularly through initiatives aimed at removing visa and travel barriers for Africans.

“His leadership is revered throughout Africa, especially for bold moves such as the abolishing of visa and visa requirements for Africans by the end of 2024, underscoring his belief in unity,” President Ruto remarked.

In his address, President Ruto also expressed shared ambitions with Akufo-Addo, particularly their mutual support for the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He noted that these initiatives hold immense potential for fostering sustainable growth across the continent.
