The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Hon. Samuel Ablakwa Okudzeto, has been actively working to support flood victims in his constituency while also navigating campaign responsibilities.

In a recent statement, he expressed his commitment to serving his people and highlighted the challenges and triumphs of his campaign efforts in North Tongu.

He also remarked on the surprising family connections of prominent politicians with his constituency, questioning the timing of these revelations.

“(Bawumia) said that apparently, his wife is from my constituency. That was a big announcement he made… it came to all of us as a surprise. I didn’t know that she’s from Juapong Zongo, as the vice president said.”

He further reflected on how political figures often highlighted these familial connections only during campaign seasons, hinting at the fleeting nature of these associations. He noted; “It’s quite interesting how North Tongu is remembered during campaigns, but, after the campaigns, that’s it.”

However, Hon. Ablakwa expected President Akufo-Addo would have shown greater concern for the flood victims given his family connections to the area.

Addressing Flood Victims’ Immediate Needs

He detailed the substantial efforts made to support and resettle those affected by the disaster, including building new homes, offering rental support, and providing essential supplies.

“My focus really has been to make sure that their immediate welfare is taken care of. I see them as human beings first, than just voters.”

He highlighted his efforts in collaboration with organizations like First Sky Group to build houses for 600 families. Additionally, he arranged a year’s rental support for senior citizens over the age of 60, prioritizing those most vulnerable.

“We have found alternative accommodation for the senior citizens those who are above 60 years, they paved the way for us, and we always have to prioritize their needs.”

On the campaign front, Hon. Ablakwa outlined his strategy to maximize voter turnout, mentioning recent initiatives aimed at energizing the constituency’s electorate.

These efforts included a successful “victory walk,” medical outreach, and a series of grassroots campaigns like house-to-house and market-to-market engagements. He emphasized; “Our motto is no complacency, no compromises. We are going all out to maximize the votes.“

He demonstrated his dedication to achieving a high voter turnout and widening his constituency’s support base.

He acknowledged the support of prominent figures like former President John Mahama’s sons, who actively participated in campaign events, adding an enthusiastic boost to the efforts.

“It was nice to see Sharaf, Shafik, and the others,” he noted, expressing appreciation for their involvement in the campaign.

Hon. Ablakwa has also retooled his campaign activists with motorbikes to enhance mobility, ensuring they have the necessary resources for effective outreach. He emphasized his resolve to continue strengthening these grassroots efforts and building a cohesive support base in North Tongu.

Beyond immediate relief efforts, Hon. Ablakwa has implemented several long-term support measures for flood victims. His focus also extended to helping the victims regain their livelihoods by returning to their farms or acquiring new skills.

“We continue to provide cash grants, and food items, and we are paying their water and light bills,” he detailed, highlighting the comprehensive approach to supporting those affected by the flood. Hon. Ablakwa’s commitment to education has also shone through.

He secured housing support for 137 displaced teachers to ensure that students’ learning would not be disrupted.

“The tertiary students who were also affected because of the spillage, we have offered them full scholarships so they are back to school so that their education is not truncated.’’

”We’ll keep doing our best ultimately to improve the welfare of the people,” he affirmed, reiterating his dedication to serving North Tongu diligently.
